My primary area of research is the role of domestic and international civil society in development and governance, namely the role of civil society in authoritarian regimes. My second main area of research is institutional change in authoritarian regimes. Specifically I examine if institutional change is a product of feedback loops, as recent research suggests, or part of a broader evolutionary interaction between ideas and political and economic institutions. Additionally, I analyze international and comparative political economy issues, such as transition economies, cross-border monetary flows, and paths of development.
