Jeff Rehbach
director, Middlebury College Community Chorus
retired, Library & Information Services (LIS), Middlebury College
It is my privilege to conduct the Middlebury College Community Chorus. This 90-member choir is open to all interested singers, and includes College alumni, faculty, staff and students. Our performances include music of Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Bruckner, and twentieth-century and contemporary composers such as Aaron Copland, Ernst Toch, Ernest Bloch, Randall Thompson, John Rutter, Bob Chilcott, René Clausen, Stephen Paulus, Cary Ratcliff, Z. Randall Stroope, Eric Whitacre, Jeffery Ames, Mack Wilberg, and Vermont composers Robert De Cormier, Peter Hamlin and Gwyneth Walker. I previously conducted the Chamber Singers (now named the College Choir, under the direction of Jeffrey Buettner), specializing in a cappella performances of music from the 15th century to 21st centuries; in addition to presenting fall and spring concerts, the 24-voice auditioned ensemble sang at Fall Family Weekend, Homecoming and Baccalaureate Services. Each year, its members learned 30-40 new works. On May 1, 2005, I conducted a performance of the Ernest Bloch's Avodath Hakodesh (Sacred Service), sung in Hebrew with both choirs accompanied by the College Orchestra in celebration of Hillel's 50th anniversary at Middlebury College. Other special concerts include a fund-raiser for our local Porter Hospital, singing A Place for Hope by Stephen Paulus, Middlebury's bicentennial celebration, and commemorative service for 9/11.
In June 2010, I accepted Middlebury College's early retirement offer. At the time, I served as Area Director for Enterprise Applications, having broad oversight of administrative systems programming, web development and central systems & networks. Previously, as LIS Policy Advisor, I edited the College Handbook, drafted policies relating to library and information technology in response to federal legislation and regulations, worked on copyright policy and interpretation, developed plans and protocols for digital archives (student theses and other documents) and served as Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) agent for the campus. From 2002 until 2005, I was LIS Special Projects Manager. My principle responsibilities were planning the new library, including the move of 700,000 items and 70 staff from 7 campus locations to the new library in early summer 2004. From 1997 to 2001, served as Acting Director and then Director of Information Technology Services. Prior to that I was Director of Computing Services and Head of User Services within ITS, developing helpdesk services, documentation and direct support for faculty, staff and students with the growth of personal computing and networking. I was Systems Librarian for the College Libraries, with responsibility for supporting computing operations throughout the library and for administering our Data Research Associates (DRA) online library system from 1985-1996. I originally came to Middlebury as Music Librarian in 1981.
Music shapes much of my life. The College Community Chorus presents annual Thanksgiving and spring concert programs. As a choral singer and coach, I have participated in many ensembles, including the Vermont Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Chamber Chorus, Early Music Vermont, the Vermont Millennium Music Festival, the Middlebury College Musical Players, and the Middlebury Community Players. I serve on the board of the Vermont American Choral Directors Association and assist Vermont ACDA with web site maintenance and special projects. With my wife, Meredith, I assist musically with worship at Memorial Baptist Church in Middlebury, Vermont, and conduct its choir. For 15 years I led the choir at the Middlebury Congregational Church, where since 1986 I've led the annual Middlebury open reading of Handel's Messiah at Christmastime, bringing hundreds of singers and players together from the community each December for this joyous occasion.
I attended Cornell University (Master of Arts, Musicology, 1982; Bachelor of Arts, Music, 1975) and Syracuse University (Master of Library and Information Studies, 1981). Additional information: My resume
