Information from Das Ewangelische Konsistorium Berlin-Brandengurg Left Germany to escape being forced to join the army, perhaps in 1848-49 because of revolts. Went to the California gold rush, then adventurer for ten years, ending up in New Orleans around 1859. Established himself in Donaldsonville, which was a center for German immigrants. Became a peddler, selling things by horse & wagon. Later went into lumber. Returned to Germany for some years, some time between 1866 and 1879. 1879: Grocer at 1030 Magazine St., New Orleans 1883-84: Grocer at Annunciation & Berlin Sts 1885-90: 37 Berlin St Died on St. Charles Ave. edge of Audubon Park, walking to his son's house, of "sun stroke." | ||||||||||||||||||
