In Spring Term 2006, 47 students in 'EC265 - Environmental Economics' conducted 12 consulting projects with a range of non-profit organizations and businesses, and 19 students in 'ES211 - Environmental Policy' conducted 5 projects on climate change and renewable energy. Details of their work will be posted soon.
In Spring Term 2005, 45 students in 'EC265 - Environmental Economics' conducted 10 consulting projects with a range of non-profit organizations and businesses. For example, John Hanley '05, Andy Rossmeissl '05, Jake Whitcomb '06 and Shaylun Young '06 produced, in collaboration with Native Energy, a business plan for a climate friendly credit-card. That plan led to the founding by Jak and Andy of a new business in downtown Middlebury, Brighter Planet.
In Spring Term 2005, 20 students in 'ES211 - Environmental Policy' led a half-day workshop entitled “Finding Common Ground: An Exploratory Workshop on Vermont’s Future in the Age of Climate Change.” Their research related to this workshop can be found on the Environmental Studies service-learning web site.
In Winter Term 2005, 20 students led a course titled, "Building the Climate Movement," in which they collaborated with six nationally recognized service-learning partners. For example, Minna Brown '07, John Hanley '05, and Makely Lyon '07 collaborated with the Green House Network to produce The Flat Earth Award, 'a humorous effort to highlight the denial of global warming by prominent public
figures.' The students in this class then led a three-day conference titled, "What Works: New Strategies for a Melting Planet," which received national press coverage (see the linked stories at the bottom of the page).
In Fall Term 2003, Laura Kelly '06, Emily Egginton '06, and Derek Singer '05 in ES211 worked with Steve Maier to co-organize a conference in Middlebury: "Addison County's 'Save Energy and Protect the Climate' Kick-Off Forum." Here are some pictures from the event.
In Fall Term 2003, Erin Doherty '05, Jean Hamilton '04, and Alvin Lam '06 in 'ES211 - Environmental Policy' produced this report for community partners in the town of Middlebury. A PowerPoint version of the report can be found here.
In Spring 2003, John Hanley '05 in 'ES211 - Environmental Policy' worked with Steve Maier of the Middlebury Area Global Warming Action Coalition. He then pursued an independent study on energy use in Middlebury, which produced this report: "Middlebury Municipalities and their Energy Consumption."
In Winter
Term 2002, the students in 'ES 10 - The Scientific and Institutional
Challenges of Becoming Carbon Neutral' (co-taught with Lori Delnegro)
produced this
report for Middlebury College's Carbon Reduction Initiative.
In
addition, over the last four years, five students that I supervised have
received state- and national-level honors:
Asher Burn-Burg '05.5 was the recipient of the Nuquist Award from the Center for Research on Vermont for Outstanding Student Research on a Vermont Topic (May 2006)
Alden Woodrow
'03 was the co-recipient of the Byan Award from the Center for Research on Vermont for excellence
in student research on Vermont as exemplified in a one-semester course
project (May 2003)
Rob Chisholm '03
was the co-winner
of the 2002 National Undergraduate Essay Contest in Agricultural,
Environmental and Development Economics (January 2003)
Jessica Wasilewski
'02 was the co-recipient
of the Nuquist Award from the Center for Research on Vermont for Outstanding
Student Research on a Vermont Topic (May 2002)
Ali Connolly '02
