the Russian verb "view" [videt'] is in essence "to be wise, to know" [vedat']; and visions are wisdoms: a wizard has superior vision,... *u(e)di-erblicken, sehen and in the sense of "have seen" meaning "to know." See Pokorny (I, 1125). I have tried to capture this relationship between "wit and wisdom" and "vision'" with the admittedly awkward "view" instead of "see" in English. I have frequently sacrificed "smoothness" in my attempts to capture some of Bely's play with sound and sense.
