FROM FIRST BASE AROUND TO HOME: RELATIONSHIP OUTCOMES AS A FUNCTION
OF HOOKUP INTIMACY LEVELS AND PERSONALITY DIMENSIONS Ari B. Silverman (Middlebury class of 2009)
& Carlos J. Vélez-Blasini Presented at
the annual meeting of the Eastern Psychological Association, Brooklyn, NY,
2010. This
study examined the relational context (expectations and outcomes) and the
impact of psychological and psychosocial factors on hooking up. In particular
the level of intimacy of specific hook up events was examined as a function
of these variables. On-line data was collected with 174 undergraduates (87
women). Controlled orientation and physical, self-validation, and
peer-approval motivations predicted intimacy of behaviors. Most hookups did
not lead to relationships except among those who explicitly sought that
outcome. |
