Abstract

A CROSS-CULTURAL EXAMINATION OF POST-DRINKING SEXUAL INFERENCES

MarYam Hamedani (Middlebury class of 2001) and Carlos Vélez-Blasini

Presented at the Annual Meeting of the Eastern Psychological Association. Baltimore, MD, March 24-26, 2000.

Native Puerto Rican and U.S. respondents were presented hypothetical heterosexual date vignettes which systematically manipulated the drinking behavior of each character. Each vignette was followed by a description of a date-rape. Results suggest the presence of important cultural differences in the interpretation of the behavior of the characters in the story as a function of their drinking. Differences associated with non-aggressive behavior were less critical; differences upon exposure to sexual violence were large and important.
