Running a Student
Group-
Nuts and Bolts
Running a student organization is hard. With spring breaks, midterms,
differing class schedules, and study abroad, it is amazing that student
groups can function efficiently.
But they can!
Maybe you're starting a new group, taking over a leadership position
in an established one, or trying to revive a faltering one. Regardless,
this section will help you make your organization efficient, effective,
and fun.
I. Sharing an Inspiring Vision
"People believe their efforts can make a difference, and work
with greater commitment, when they are guided by a vision." This
section of the Interaction Associates, LLC Facilitative Leadership
training will help you "create and communicate an inspiring image
of the future and enroll others in its pursuit."
II. Creating
and Using a Mission Statement
"A mission statement states what your organization exists to
do, in a clear and simple way. The process of creating the statement
is also vital to your organization. It can bring disagreement to the
surface and allow you to decide, once and for all, what your organization
exists to do." This document by the World Union of Jewish Students
clearly articulates the uses for a mission statement and guides you
through creating one.
III. Agendas and Meeting Design
This is a basic resource for designing agendas and meetings by Mary
Fillmore. Sometimes, simpler is better!
IV. Getting Unstuck: Common Problems in Meetings & Some Solutions
Sometimes meetings bog down or don't go very well. This document lists
some of the common problems in meetings and some techniques you might
use to address them.
V. Financial
Information for Clubs and Organizations
Budgeting can be a confusing process. This tutorial (based closely
on a version by the University of Notre Dame) will walk you through
everything from planning to managing your club's budget.
