What do I have to do?
The FTUSL program is designed for students who are
interested in studying Service-Learning, and serving while engaged
in their practicum experience:
-
Attend an orientation session at your campus before
you sign up.
-
Meet once a semester on your campus for conversations
about your effects on the classroom, community, and the world.
-
Engage in monthly internet discussions with student
teachers across the state.
-
Design a potential service-learning unit based on
your class's specific community, grade, and curriculum to provide
as resource for your class, and for student teachers around the
state.
-
Meet with FTUSL members from around the state at
the end of the year to celebrate and reflect on your work this year.
-
Complete the requirements from your teacher education
department.
-
Document all your activities on monthly time sheets,
tracking your effects on the class, and their effects on the classroom
and community.

This
year it became obvious that the key to true comprehension of the theory,
and the key to learning how rich teaching can be-- not just for a
classroom but for a whole community-- was service learning.
