Through a Civic Lens:
Vermont Campus Compact's Annual Statewide Conference
and Recognition Awards

Higher education is facing increasing pressure in a rapidly changing
political, social and economic environment. Civic engagement is
an effective strategy to develop comprehensive approaches to meet
pressing challenges, and can serve other institutional imperatives.
For example, a growing body of research connects the principles
and practices of civic engagement to optimum student learning environments
and conditions. It can also support institutional efforts to increase
diversity, create a competitive niche, or improve retention.
This annual conference features a keynote address, workshops, roundtables,
and networking to support civic engagement on campuses. There is
an increasing emphasis to provide professional development, program
models, and opportunities to explore how colleges and universities
can use service, service-learning and civic engagement to enhance
various outcomes in higher education, such as: student learning,
retention, diversity, residential life, global citizenship, community
building, sustainability, alcohol and substance abuse, student engagement,
and more. This conference aims to:
strengthen institutional capacity to fulfill civic and social
missions;
promote high-quality educational experiences and outcomes
through civic engagement; and
encourage cross-institutional collaboration toward similar
goals.
The conference is followed by the annual statewide recognition
awards for civic engagement. See awards
for additional information.
