Institute Description:

The Community Based Research Institute will bring together faculty and administrators who seek to connect their teaching and research to real-world applications, both in developing new approaches and improving current practice. The institute will introduce attendees to the theoretical basis of community-based research then engage them in exploration of best practices and possible applications. Workshops and sessions will provide guidance and examples and provide time for hands-on project and program development.

What is Community-Based Research?

"…a partnership of students, faculty, and community members who collaboratively engage in research with the purpose of solving a pressing community problem or effecting social change." (Strand, et. al., p. 3)*

-Strand, Marullo, Cutforth, Stoecker, Donohue. (2003)
Community-Based Research and Higher Education. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass.

Guest Consultant:

Sam Marullo, Georgetown University

Sam Marullo, Ph.D., is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Georgetown University. Many of his courses integrate community-based learning, through which students integrate their work with and for community-based organizations in D.C. with their course work. Marullo is the Director of Research at the Center for Social Justice at Georgetown University. He is the chair of the board of the Washington D.C. Community Research and Learning (CoRAL) Network and helped to create the network with the support of grants from the Bonner Foundation, the Corporation for National and Community Service, and the Meyer Foundation. The CoRAL Network is a consortium of seven Washington area universities and colleges and numerous community based organizations (CBOs) which have been involved in collaborative, community based research to address the social change needs of the CBOs.

Marullo is co-author of the recently published, Community-Based Research and Higher Education: Principles and Practices (Jossey-Bass, 2003). He has published a number of articles on service-learning and the civic engagement of higher education in academic journals such as Teaching Sociology, The American Behavioral Scientist, and The Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning. His participatory research work in the community focuses on urban economic (re)development and its effects on local communities-particularly displacement and housing affordability.
