University of Vermont, Vermont Campus Compact Institute Description: The Community Based Research Institute will bring together faculty and administrators who seek to connect their teaching and research to real-world applications, both in developing new approaches and improving current practice. The institute will introduce attendees to the theoretical basis of community-based research then engage them in exploration of best practices and possible applications. Workshops and sessions will provide guidance and examples and provide time for hands-on project and program development. What

Marullo, Georgetown University Sam
Marullo, Ph.D., is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology
and Anthropology at Georgetown University. Many of his courses integrate
community-based learning, through which students integrate their work
with and for community-based organizations in D.C. with their course
work. Marullo is the Director of Research at the Center for Social Justice
at Georgetown University. He is the chair of the board of the Washington
D.C. Community Research and Learning (CoRAL) Network and helped to create
the network with the support of grants from the Bonner Foundation, the
Corporation for National and Community Service, and the Meyer Foundation.
The CoRAL Network is a consortium of seven Washington area universities
and colleges and numerous community based organizations (CBOs) which
have been involved in collaborative, community based research to address
the social change needs of the CBOs. Marullo
is co-author of the recently published, Community-Based Research and
Higher Education: Principles and Practices (Jossey-Bass, 2003). He has
published a number of articles on service-learning and the civic engagement
of higher education in academic journals such as Teaching Sociology,
The American Behavioral Scientist, and The Michigan Journal of Community
Service Learning. His participatory research work in the community focuses
on urban economic (re)development and its effects on local communities-particularly
