NCBI Workshop
March 14-15, 2007NCBI Course:
Location: McCardell Bicentennial Hall Middlebury College
Instructor: Dr. Peter Cooper
User Services Staff of the National Center for Biotechnology Information.
Overview:
GenBank is the National Institute of Health genetic sequence database, a cross referenced annotated collection of all worldwide publicly available DNA base pair sequences. In August 2005, GenBank content exceeded 100 gigabases of DNA data and is still growing exponentially. This database opens a new chapter in our quest to understand who we are. Information about our blue print, our relation to other organisms, our response to medicine, and our inherited diseases are all contained in this database. Here is an opportunity to learn how to use GenBank from insiders who maintain and curate this information.
This event will consist of an overview and hands-on exploration of the NCBI ( National Center for Biotechnology Information) tools and resources. Peter Cooper from the NCBI will be on hand to present A Field Guide to GenBank and NCBI Molecular Biology Resources. This course will consist of a lecture and a hands-on computer workshop on GenBank and related databases covering effective use of the Entrez databases and search services, the BLAST similarity search engine, genome data, and related resources. (For further details about the Field Guide, including topics covered see: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Class/FieldGuide/ )
