HA227: Indian Painting
5 November 2002
Exam guide/notice

IMPORTANT CHANGE:
I HAVE DECIDED TO MOVE THE EXAM TO THURSDAY, NOV.14 (instead of Tuesday, Nov.12) to give you extra time to study. In large part this is due to the fact that the slide library is overwhelmed with work and has not been able to keep up with posting slides on the web. I also realized that, with Shazia Sikander’s lecture on Thursday afternoon, you might appreciate not having to sit through 2 lectures that day (but DON’T skip her lecture for lack of sleep!). The material covered in Tuesday the 12th’s lecture will not be on the exam.
Early Bird special: If, however, moving the exam poses a problem for any of you, you may take it on Tuesday as originally planned. I can make arrangements with the slide library for you to take it individually. Please see me asap if you need to do this.

The exam will be a bit different this time. It will consist of five short (12-minute) essays whose answers should be based upon class discussion and, where relevant, the readings. The examples will be chosen from the list below (all are now on the class web page). Please note that there are other examples on the web page—they are there to jog your memory and give you extra examples upon which to build your essays.

2. A Village Scene (probably Rania), by Ghulam Ali Khan, Haryana, Company School, ca. 1820
3. Lala Din Dayal, Maharajah Sri Pratab Singh of Orchha, photograph, Central India, 1882
