SGA Winter Carnival $5500 TABLED 7-0
Discussion Issues:
1. Chinese Club
a. Came in front of the Committee a second time to ask for a $5801 Lunar New Year Celebration
i. This celebration would include a Peking Opera performance and a leather puppet show
1. Another student organization has spoken to pay for the afterparty
b. This time, Chepan came to the committee with a decreased request, due to increased co-sponsorship from other Middlebury Departments and Student Organizations
i. However, he still was asking for a considerable amount of money, thus the committee decided that since this is a specific audience and the club has only been in existence for 2 years, that we feel comfortable giving the club $1200 for this event.
2. College Republicans
a. As noted from last week, the College Republicans are trying to send a couple of their members to a conference in Washington DC. They spoke with Tim Spears (?) because Washington DC falls outside of the new 300 miles parameter
i. We decided that we would fund as much money for air travel as we would for driving that distance (22 cents per mile)
ii. We also approved $15 for metro rides once the members of the club are in Washington
3. Lindy Hop
a. A representative from this group came in front of the committee to clarify a previous request for $800
i. The J-term show ($800 and previously approved) needs to be paid for in conjunction with the Spring show (also $800). So the club would like to request money for both of these shows simultaneously.
4. Mchacka Mchacka
a. A member of the club came to discuss the possibility for members of the group to drive to Manchester to teach the language of Swahili to elementary students
i. The budget request had an inaccurate cent per mile calculation, which we mentioned to the representative.
5. Men’s Rugby Club
a. Requested $20,324 for their Spring Break Trip
i. In the request, only a rough estimate of $10,000 was placed for a goal of fundraising
1. The request was tabled until the committee receives a more accurate estimate of the money requested from their budget
6. Sailing Club
a. As noted in the fall, the Sailing Club used an internal system to pay for transportation costs to and from regattas, thus they requested the bulk amount for the spring ($900)
b. The members walked us through their requests which were all within their budget
c. The always wished to make note that due to a highly successful capital campaign, they plan to purchase new boats for the upcoming fall season.
i. They received a donation of $30,000 atop their fundraising goal of $30,000 (which seems attainable)
ii. They wanted to make note that the spending patterns for upcoming years will differ from the past due to this massive purchase.
7. SGA
a. The Winter Carnival sub-committee of SGA was formed when the administration pronounced that Winter Carnival in upcoming years would be reduced by a day. In an effort to increase student participation in the events on Friday (to hopefully change the decision of the Board members and the Administration), this committee would like funding from the Finance Committee to further their goals
i. They have asked for an itemized budget consisting of an opening ceremony with fireworks, a Northern lights/winter Olympics, publicity, snow sculptures and other unforeseeable costs
1. They are in discussions with MCAB about funding and admitted that this request should only be for $1500 (to cover the Winter Olympics and Publicity), because MCAB has verbally agreed but not for certain agreed to fund these events
2. The committee has decided that since MCAB will be meeting this upcoming Monday (January 28) that we will wait for MCAB to offer an amount that they will be willing to support, and then fund accordingly
a. As a committee, we decided that we support this initiative, but we are waiting for a more precise amount that we would be spending.
8. Ultimate Frisbee
a. Due to the recent 300 mile radius rule, the usual trip taken by the Men’s and Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team will need some reconsideration
i. The committee viewed the outlined prospectus, however, did not come to a decision on the upcoming request
