Summary:
Of note in the year 2001-2002 is Malaysia's attempt to modernize its surface fleet with the purchase of two German frigates; they will significantly improve the capabilities of the Malaysia navy. Taiwan is also purchasing ships for its fleet. The four newly purchased Kidd class destroyers purchased from the United States should serve as an effective counter to the four Sovremenny class destroyers China purchased from Russia.
