International Environment and Development Internships in Washington D.C.


This is a checklist of organizations that sponsor internships. The terms of internships vary considerably. Contact each organization directly for more information.


AAAS/Program on Science & International Security

Interns work with the staff of the AAAS Program on Science and International Security (PSIS) on international security and arms control education projects. They research topics of current interest (e.g. regional security issues, proliferation of advanced weaponry), assist in the preparation of symposic and colloquia and are responsible for developing written products resulting from their projects. They should have an interest in the fields of science, arms control and international security.

Academy for Educational Development

An independent non-profit organization focusing on education, international and social development and communication technology. An internship with AED offers students the opportunity to become involved in a variety of activities such as research and writing, coordination of itineraries and meeting schedules for consultants, visitors and students, and proposal preparation and production.

Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers

The Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers represents more than 7,000 individuals with 4,000 who have attained the Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) credential. Members of the Academy are responsible for the protection of public health and the environment. There are two internships available: Marketing Internship and Environmental Internship. The two positions that we offer are excellent opportunities for students interested in either association management or the environment. These intern positions are considered extensions of the staff, thus offering experience that is hands-on and can be applied to future career enhancement.

Access Security Information Service

ACCESS is a non-profit, non-partisan information service on international security and peace. ACCESS was established in 1985 to guide concerned citizens and experts to sources of information on issues such as 'US foreign and military policy, arms control, regional conflicts, a-.id US-Soviet relations. The following internships are available in ACCESS throughout the year: Inquiry Service/Speakers Referral Service Intern, Outreach Intern, and Publications Intern. Access offers modest remuneration for interns in the amount of $50/week. All applicants must have previous office experience, as well as computer skills.

African Development Foundation

ADF was designed as a complement to the US foreign aid program, and its aim is to deliver economic assistance directly to grassroots organizations and individuals in Africa. The projects that they focus consist of micro-enterprise development sustainable agriculture and water supply management.

African Methodist Episcopal Church Serv and Develop Agency

The African Methodist Episcopal Church Service and Development Agency, Inc. works in development programs in the fields of education, agriculture, health care and human services in Western and Southern Africa and the Carribean. Intern duties will be determined by the InternÕs abilities and interests.

African Wildlife Federation

AWF works toward building the capacity of African individuals and institutions to effectively mange their natural resources, especially wildlife and wildlife habitats. It does this through program activities in protected areas of management, environmental awareness, policy development and implementation, conservation science, support for species and habitats of prime ecological significance and community based approaches to conservation.

African-American Labor Center, Inc.

The African-American Labor Center works to strengthen African trade unions so they can better serve their members and participate in the development of their countries. Interns are involved in research, writing and administrative support.

Africare

Africare is a nonprofit organization that administers and performs development work throughout Africa. We are a development oriented group interested in Africa with particular attention to development assistance and the Sahel. Intern duties include maintaining correspondence and assisting with special development projects.

Aga Khan Foundation, USA

AKF, is a private, non-denominational development agency promoting creative and effective solutions to selected problems that impede social development in low-income countries of Asia and Africa. AKF encourages initiatives in health, education and rural development that have the potential to promote the well-being of large numbers of poor people in the developing world.

Agriculture Cooperative Development International

Nonprofit training, technical and management assistance co-op; mandate is to respond to needs of agriculture co-ops, farms credit systems etc.

American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee

The American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee defends the rights of people of Arab descent and promotes their rich ethnic heritage. ADC, as a grassroots advocacy organization based in Washington, DC, serves a national membership of Arab Americans, joined by Americans of all ethnic origins, who are committed to challenging defamation, discrimination and disenfranchisement wherever they occur. Through this program, students will have the opportunity to learn about the issues confronting Arab-Americans; develop effective leadership skills and obtain practical training in community organizing, research, writing, media, legal issues, political activism, and coalition work; and meet and interact with other activists and Arab-Americans from across the country.

American Association for World Health

The American Association for World Health was founded in 1953 as an educational and charitable non-governmental, membership organization. The purpose of AAWH is to rally US citizens to support the programs of the World Health organization. Interns have an opportunity to participate in the research and coordination of AAWH-sponsored campaigns in the US such as World AIDS- Day and World Health Day, as well as answering constituentsÕ requests. In addition, interns help research and write the association's quarterly newsletter Internships are unpaid, are approximately 15 hours each week, and are available in the Fall, Spring, and Summer.

American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums

Affiliated with American Institute of Park Executives; founded in 1924. Expansive involvement in conservation, science and education.

American Farmland Trust

American Farmland Trust is a national, nonprofit, membership organization dedicated to protecting agricultural resources. AFTÕs action-oriented programs include public education; technical assistance in policy development and direct farmland protection projects. AFT is seeking an intern for its Communications Division. You will create, write and produce items for public consumption and assist in related activities in this busy public relations office. Must be creative, energetic, detail-oriented, dependable, thorough and willing to see a project through. This is a great opportunity to enter the conservation field and see your hard work, put to a good purpose. Internship pays $6 per hour.

American Food Companies

The American Food Companies sells food and food processing equipment in Russia and in other former USSR Republics. Interns will be expected to help prepare offers, proposals, prepare for trade shows, telephone solicitations. Russian language skill ideal

American Forest and Paper Association

The American Forest and Paper Association is the national trade association of the forest, pulp, paper, paperboard and wood products industry. We have two possible internships opportunities: 1) Someone to conduct research on recycling issues by

American Forests

American Forests focuses on conservation action, education and the search for solutions that protect the forest and its living creatures, as well as recognize the needs of people. American Forests believes in the conservation of the %%-hole forest and healthy ecosystems that nurture birds, deer, fish, soil, water and people. Interns work in communications, public relations, advertising, marketing, policy, editorial and magazine publications.

American Jewish Congress

American Jewish Congress legislative interns gain substantive experience in the realms of both American politics and Jewish communal relations. Interns attend and report on Congressional committee hearings, as well as interest group coalition meetings on a variety of policy issues. Our agenda includes US/Israel relations, civil and constitutional rights, separation of church and state, reproductive freedom and women's equality, and other social justice issues. Interns are also assigned administrative responsibilities, such as xeroxing and filing news articles.

American National Red Cross

The American National Red Cross does not have an active internship program. It does, however, have numerous volunteer opportunities available. Some of these volunteer opportunities consist of weekend and evening projects. Call for more information.

American Petroleum Institute

The American Petroleum Institute is a non-profit, trade association which provides legislative, technical, scientific, economic, and public affairs services to the domestic petroleum industry. API supports creative scientific research on energy, the economy and the environment. The Institute offers internships in the following areas: legislative/regulatory, finance/accounting, statistics, engineering, administration, public relations, economics, and legal.

American Resources Group

The American Resources Group is a nonprofit organization engaged in educational, monitoring, research, and related activities to promote the wise use of America's natural resources.

American Rivers

American Rivers is a national conservation organization, which since 1973 has been addressing river protection issues across the country. The mission is to preserve and restore America's river systems. American rivers provides technical assistance to local and state 4-H leaders and government officials working to protect rivers and streams. Interns conduct research on targeted industries and corporations; assist in strategic marketing analysis and long-range planning; and help develop marketing proposals.

American Society for International Law

The American Society of International Law is a professional association devoted to the study and use of law in international affairs. ASIL publishes four leading periodicals in the field: American Journal of International Law, International Legal Materials, Proceedings of the Annual Meeting, and Basic Documents of International Law. Publications Interns help with editorial and production aspects. An intern is assigned to each publication. Interns perform related duties designed to help them explore the field of international law.

American Society of Landscape Architects

ASLA serves as landscape architectÕ collective voice in areas concerning education, legislation, professionalism and the environment.

Americans for Democratic Action

ADA is the nation's oldest liberal lobbying group. We work on civil rights, women's rights, foreign and defense concerns, as well as environmental and other issues. We welcome students from all backgrounds to participate in our unpaid internship that is flexible to allow for classes and other activities. Interns choose two or three issues of their interest as well as work on fundraising events and other off-ice activities. Interns are assigned substantive projects including analyzing prospective legislation, attending congressional hearings, writing, articles for membership publications and performing limited clerical duties.

Americans for the Environment

Americans for the Environment is a national nonpartisan education and training organization. AFE, with the support of conservation and electoral experts, seeks to link environmental concerns and public processes by providing citizens with the knowledge and skills necessary to participate effectively in the electoral process. Internships with AFE are designed to produce information and data that will assist in planning aspects of AFE's training, fundraising, and program strategy for the next several years.

Amnesty International-Government Affairs Office

Amnesty International is an independent worldwide human rights movement working for the releases of prisoners of conscience, fair trials for political prisoners and an end to torture and executions. The Washington Office is responsible for representing Amnesty Internationals concerns about human rights abuses to United States government officials in an attempt to bring United States pressure to bear on countries that violate human rights. Interns work in the government affairs office.

Anacostia Watershed Society

The Anacostia Watershed Society is a citizen-based environmental group working to restore the Anacostia River and watershed in the metropolitan Washington, DC area. The Society organizes local volunteers to take direct action in restoration projects such as tree planting, stream and river cleanup, environmental equity issues, and environmental education workshops in schools. Interns are responsible for outreach projects, fundraising, newsletter preparation, assisting project managers, and environmental education.

Animal Welfare Institute

AWI was founded to reduce the sum total of pain and fear inflected on animals by humans. The InstituteÕs goals are humane treatment of laboratory animals and the development and use of non-animal testing methods, prevention of trade in wild-caught exotic birds and the regulation of shipping conditions for all animals, preservations of species threatened by extinction and a permanent ban on commerce in the flesh of whales. Interns assist with administrative tasks and work in the areas of public information and publishing.

Antarctica Project

The Antarctica Project leads the domestic and international campaigns to protect Antarctica. Ideal candidate will be an upperclassman majoring in science, international relations, or environmental studies. Interns are assigned a major project to complete independently, and are also expected to aid in the administration for our two person office.

Appropriate Technology International

ATI is a development assistance organization with programs in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The goal ,of ATI is to boost productivity and incomes of small producers, foster new or expand existing enterprises and generate broad-based economic growth. In order to accomplish this goal, ATI implements filed projects in tandem with local partners, providing technical assistance and leveraging financial resources for targeted development programs with strategic and widespread impact.

Asia Foundation

The Asia Foundation is a private, non-profit grant making organization involved with institutions in Asia. At the Asia Foundation, our program intern is responsible for-a variety of duties. Primarily, the intern functions as a program assistant, arranging and implementing programs for Asian grantees who come to Washington, DC, including both Houses of Congress, the Supreme Court, the State Department, the Agency for International Development, the US Information Agency, the National Security Council, the Pentagon, major universities, and private organizations. In addition, the intern performs a variety of other tasks, from answering phones to making deliveries.

Asia Watch

Asia Watch (a division of Human Rights Watch) is a private, international human rights monitoring organization, whose goal it is to promote human rights in Asia. Interns assist the Asia Watch staff in all aspects of everyday activity-including research, administrative support and representation of Asia Watch at meetings. In applying Interns must send cover letter, resume, writing sample and three references. Requirements include an interest in human rights and international relations and enthusiasm.

Association of Community-Based Education

ACBE is a national membership organization of institutions involved through education, in community building and indigenous leadership development. Member organizations offer programs that promote cultural awareness and community pride and self-reliance. They are sanctioned by and accountable to their communities, with community people active in organizational decision-making. Their programs integrate individual learning with broader community development objectives.

Association of State & Territorial Health Officials

ASTHO represents the directors of public health in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the US Territories and Possessions. The purpose of the Association is to formulate and influence, through collective action, the establishment of sound national p public health policy and to assist and serve state health departments in the development and implementation of state programs and policies or the public's health and the prevention of diseases.

Atlantic Council of the US

The Atlantic Council of the United States is a non-profit public policy center addressing the advancement of US global interests among the Atlantic and Pacific communities. The Council's purpose is to identify challenges and opportunities, illuminate choices, and foster informed public debate about US foreign policy. Internships are available in the following areas: Office of NATO and European Affairs, the Harriman Chair for East-West Studies, the Pro,-.ram on Atlantic-Pacific Interrelationships, and the Program on Central and Eastern Europe.

Audubon Naturalist Society

ANS is a pioneer in the linking of natural history studies with conservation activates. The Society sponsors a variety of educational programs and natural history and conservation in the Washington metropolitan region. Interns help plan and teach classes for children ages 4-10, lead programs for school groups, assist on day long or overnight field trips, work- on independent projects and conduct presentations representing the Society. (Not affiliated with the National Audobon Society).


Biodiversity Action Network

The Biodiversity Action Network is an advocacy network of US organizations working to conserve biological diversity. BIONET is seeking, interns who are interested in environmental and legislative issues, particularly biodiversity conservation. A@ strong commitment to conservation of biodiversity is essential. Duties will include: research, writing, organizing meetings, coordinating projects, data processing, proofreading, and clerical work.

Bread for the World

BFW is a nationwide, Christian lobby (grassroots) movement lobbying our nationÕs decision makers seeking justice for the world's hungry people. Intern positions are available in the following departments: Administration, Communications, Development, Issues, Media, Organizing, and Bread for the World Institute. Interns are involved in a variety of substantive projects and are assigned such tasks as writing articles for publication, researching issues, producing issues, producing videos, lobbying, public speaking, and fundraising.

Brookings Institution

The Brookings Institution is a think tank devoted to nonpartisan research, education and publication in economics, government, foreign policy and the social sciences generally. BrookingsÕ main purpose is bring knowledge to bear on the current and emerging public policy problems facing the American people. Brookings has a variety of different opportunities in Government Studies (797-6050), Center of Public Policy Education (797-6268), Economic Studies (797-6104), Foreign Policy Studies (797-6102), Public Affairs (797-6105), Publications (797-6107), and the Social Science Computation Center (797-6190). Application Deadlines: Fall (August 15) and. Summer (April 15). We will have summer interns, and will accept applications from your students with the numerous others we receive from around the country.

Bruce Company

The Bruce Company is an environmental consulting firm. Interns provide administrative and computer support to consulting staff working with US EPA's global climate change programs, process mail and phone orders; keep record of materials sent and do monthly inventory; meet deadlines when large volume orders need to be processed; and use computer to update database and print labels. Requires clear speaking voice, good penmanship, attention to detail, and able to work 2 to 3 days per week.


CONCERN

CONCERN's mission is to broaden public participation in the protection of the environment. Their goal is to promote environmental literacy and action by supplying citizens with the information they need to be effective advocates in their communities for policies and programs that improve environmental quality and public health. Interns assist with the research and writing of CONCERN's Community Action Guides, take part in Community Outreach programs, contribute to the design and layout of CONCERN information sheets and assist with management of data entry and distribution of materials.

Campaign for United Nations Reform

The Campaign for United Nations Reform, a bipartisan organization, was started in 1975. Its primary goal remains to gain support for an enhanced, reformed UN. In recent years the UN has become more effective. However, it still lacks the structures, authority and funding to assure a peaceful, orderly and more just world. Public support for the UN continues to be strong but is largely philosophical and passive. The Campaign works to fill the void throught lobbying, electioneering, and public education.

Campus Green Vote/Center for Environmental Citizenship

The Center for Environmental Citizenship (CEC) works to engage a diversity of student environmentalists in the public problem solving process around our local, state and national environmental crises. CEC has developed a training pro-ram, Campus Green Vote, which trains campus environmentalists and student leaders in the organizational skills necessary to run effective issues oriented campaigns. The intern will be working directly with the training, director to develop and implement a week long, summer, political skills training program. The intern will conduct research necessary for various training workshops, develop an organizing manual and other materials needed for the training, help with media coverage, and organize logistics for the training.

Carrying Capacity Network

CCN focuses on environmental quality, population stabilization, resource conservation and growth control. CCN serves as a catalyst for cooperation and information exchange among diverse groups involved in carrying capacity issues. Interns assist in managing the database, research and write for educational and outreach purposes, public contact with the media, environmental groups and activists, and perform administrative duties. Center for Development and Population Activities

CEDPA is a woman-focused non-profit international development organization. Its mission is to empower women at all levels of society to be full partners in development. All programs are designed and managed by women to promote positive change for women. CEDPA works with organizations in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. CEDPA reaches women and girls with culturally appropriate programs in family planning, health, education and vocational training. Interns are hired on an as needed basis. Duties are determined by current projects.

Center for Marine Conservation

The Center is dedicated to protection of the marine environment and its wildlife, specifically marine mammals, sea turtles, fish and their respective habitats and to the conservation of coastal and ocean resources. It accomplishes this goal through public awareness and education, political lobbying, grassroots activities and collaborative efforts, both nationally and internationally. Internships are available in such areas as marine debris and entanglement, sea turtle conservation, marine mammal conservation, marine habitat protection, fisheries conservation and marine biological diversity.

Center for Science in the Public Interest

The Center for Science in the Public Interest is a national consumer organization that focuses on health and nutrition issues by disclosing deceptive marketing practices, dangerous food additives or contaminants, and flawed science propagated by industries concerned with their pro-fits. Internships are available in the following areas: Consumer Health/Nutrition Project, Children's Nutrition Project, Legal Affairs Office, Alcohol and Public Policy, Americans for Safe Food, and Management/Administration.

Center for Strategic and International Studies

The Center for Strategic and International Studies offers internships for students interested in a hands-on learning experience with a public policy research institute. Responsibilities are assigned by the individual project directors and will vary according to program needs. Both research and clerical duties can be expected--from collecting data at government and on-government agencies such as The Library of Congress, State and Commerce Departments, International Monetary Fund (IMF), and foreign embassies, to conference and seminar organization, answering phones, and xeroxing.

Center for Women's Policy Studies

CWPS is an independent feminist policy research and advocacy institution. The CenterÕs programs combine advocacy, research, policy development and public education to advance the agenda for women's equality and empowerment. CWPS programs address educational equity, work/family and workplace diversity policies, economic opportunity for low, income women, violence against women, girls and violence, women's decision-making, reproductive rights and health and women and AIDS. Internships combine public policy research and advocacy projects.

Center of Concern

The Center of Concern is a small peace and justice research organization with a full-time staff of 13 plus a few volunteers and interns. Because of our small size, we offer a unique opportunity for interns to get hands-on substantive experience in a social justice organization. The following departments have intern opportunities: Horn of Africa Project, Africa Hunger Project, Foreign Aid and International Financial Institutions, Health Care Reform, and Women and Economics.

Chemonics

The principle function of Chemonics is to provide technical assistance to developing countries in agriculture and agribusiness, environmental and natural resources local government and municipal development, finance and banking, and enterprise development and privatization. Chemonics manages multidisciplinary advisory teams to help carry out long-term development projects.

Chol-Chol Foundation for Human Development

NGO is working to end world hunger through teaching better farming methods in Chile and Nigeria. Interns will assist with fundraising proposal preparation and other office work. Chol-Chol is flexible and will work with intems to see what they hope to accomplish.

Citizens Trade Campaign

Citizens Trade Campaign is a coalition of environmental, consumer, labor, family farm, religious, civic and other organizations promoting environmental and social justice in US trade policy. CTC works closely with national organizations in Washington as well as activists in 48 states across the country in public education and lobbying on trade issues.

Clean Water Action

Clean Water Action is a national citizens lobby group advocating legislation for clean and safe water. The organization hires people to work part-time evenings doing telephone follow-up with members to give them political updates, get them involved, and increase their financial support.

Clean Water Network

The Clean Water Network, a project housed at the Natural Resources Defense Council, works with 450+ citizen organizations all over the country to strengthen the Clean Water Act in Congress. The Network is seeking an energetic, well-organized person to

Climate Institute

The Climate Institute is an international organization committed to increasing public and government awareness and understanding of environmental issues such as global warming and ozone depletion. It currently works under the auspices of the United Nation's Environmental Program to coordinate ministerial briefings on climate change issues in developing and Eastern European countries. Internships involve clerical duties as well as attending hearings, performing research, and writing articles for the Climate Institute's Newsletter. Internship hours and duration are flexible and academic credit can be arranged.

Coast Alliance

The Coast Alliance was founded for the purpose of increasing public awareness of the coast's immense value, bringing new and important scientific facts about coastal ecology to public attention, encouraging groups across the country to work- for protection of valuable coastal resources and urging federal, state, and local governments to strengthen policies and programs to protect coastal ecosystems.

Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe

CSCE (commonly known as the Helsinki Commission) is an independent government agency that monitors compliance with the Helsinki Final Act. The Commission focuses on political and human rights developments in the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union and Central/Eastern Europe. Fall and Spring internships are available.

Committee for National Security

The Committee for National Security is a private, non-partisan organization is composed of more than one hundred forty prominent Americans. CNS believes that America needs a broader concept of national security. The Lawyer's Alliance for World Security and the Committee for National Security has openings for interns each semester. Interns spend over 60% of their time doing substantive research on arms control and national security issues. Interns regularly attend and report on congressional hearings, State Department briefings, press conferences, and lobby coalition meetings. Interns are a valued part of the CNS team and are treated accordingly.

Community Action/Intervention Alliance

CAIA works to build local and global movements for positive social change through reality tours and international partnerships. Interns organize alternative tours of Washington on local and international levels, set up special events, and work on

Conservation Fund

National, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing land and water conservation with creative ideas and new resources; establishes partnerships with other nonprofit organizations.

Conservation International

Conservation International is dedicated to saving endangered rain forests and other ecosystems worldwide and the millions of plants and animals that rely on these habitats for survival. Conservation InternationalÕs focus is to build local capacity for conservation in developing countries through financial and technical support to local communities, private organizations and government agencies. Cl's "ecosystem conservation" approach balances conservation goals with local economic needs.

Consumers For World Trade

As an intern at CWT, a vast array of activities and assignments are available. Although changes in intensity of current trade issues may cause an intern to be focused on one segment more than another, this internship always offers a varied means of obtaining a hands-on grasp of trade policy issues. In addition to understanding the issues, one will learn how they affect government institutions, US and foreign based international businesses providing goods or services, and most importantly the consumer of these goods and services. The intern will: follow current trade issues by tracking publications, help create and improve the Consumers for World Trade Job Bank, aid in the preparation and dissemination of CWT gain a greater knowledge of the current job mark- et, informational materials, reports, and newsletters, attend various seminars, and assist with general office duties.

Container Recycling Institute

The Container Recycling Institute is a nonprofit research and education organization devoted to the stud y of alternatives for reducing beverage containers. Intern responsibilities will include assisting with the newsletter, answering phones, and general office duties. Each intern is assigned to at least one original research project.

Council for a Livable World

The Council for a Livable World is an organization that lobbies congress on arms control issues. The Council, founded in 1962, is dedicated to reducing the military budget to rational levels. An intern would be given substantive issues while here and would be expected to do writing and research. They would attend hearings and attend Monday Lobbies. These are lobbying meetings to formulate strategies on upcoming legislation. Interns would also provide general office support.

Council on Hemispheric Affairs

COHA was founded to promote the common interest of the hemisphere, raise the visibility and the importance of the inter-American relationship and encourage the formulation of rational and constructive policies toward Latin America. Interns work closely with senior regional specialists , as well as pursue research topics of their own interest.

Defenders of Wildlife

Defenders of Wildlife is devoted to the conservation of endangered species and threatened wildlife and uses all of its resources to protect and restore wild animals and plants. Defenders' programs enhance and protect the natural abundance and diversity of native wildlife. Program areas include protection and restoration of endangered species, protection of marine mammals, preservation of biological diversity, banning,-, the importation of wild-caught birds and the promotion of watchable wildlife viewing areas. Interns have specific assigned responsibilities and assist with all office operations when necessary. Internships are available in conservation, development, wildlife law, media relations and science policy.

Delegation of the Commission of the European Community

The European Community Information Service is responsible for providing information on the activities, policies, and publications of the European Communities. The following departments have internship opportunities: Office of Press and Public Affairs, Public Inquiries, Academic Affairs, Europe Magazine, Speaker's Bureau, Congressional Affairs, and the Audio/Visual Department.

The Development Group for Alternative Policies is a not-for-profit international development policy and resource organization created in 1977 not simply for the purpose of analyzing US and multilateral aid policy, but also to demonstrate practically how poor communities and popular organizations can exercise greater control over the policies, projects and programs that affect them. Current program focus includes: the North American Free Trade Agreement; World Bank/IMF structural adjustment programs; the Enterprise for the American Initiative. Ducks Unlimited

Ducks Unlimited is an international conservation organization which has been protecting wetlands for over 55 years. Through the Federal Affairs office in Washington, DC, Ducks Unlimited is relaying it's message of wetlands conservation to Congress and the Administration. Intern projects will involve helping to can-\ out the work of a small Washington, DC office of a major conservation organization. Projects will vary depending on the time of year and the student with us. Work may include: researching federal laws and current information, playing a leading role in helping devise and implement an educational campaign, attending Congressional hearings, and all manner of other activities undertaken in a small and enthusiastic federal affairs office.



EPICA/Ecumentical Program on Central America and Carribean

EPICA is an educational and advocacy organization working on social, political, religious, economic, foreign policy, and human rights issues affecting Central America and the Caribbean (very predominantly the focus will be on Guatemala in the coming months). intern responsibilities include: research (investigate specific socioeconomic problems in Central America and the Carribean with attention to US policy ramifications), community outreach (promote and participate in EPICA and related organizations workshops, presentations and other educational activities which advocate for social justice in central American and the Carribean) , and office administration (general duties including mail order sales, computer work, filing, news clippings--25% of the time).

Environmental & Energy Study Institute

The Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) is a non-partisan, non-profit public policy research institute and analysis organization. Our key responsibility is to provide Members of Congress and other national policy makers with objective, concise policy analysis and recommendations on environmental, energy and sustainable development issues. We are neither a lobbying nor scientific organization. Environmental Action

Environmental Action works for strong state and federal environmental laws. EA uses its educational, legal, technical and organizing expertise to promote environmental protection and assist grassroots organizations. EA offers internships with its Executive Project, which maintains the overall well-being of the organization, its Energy project, its Energy Conservation Coalition, in Biological Alternatives to Pesticides, its Toxics Project and its Solid Waste Alternatives Project. EDF is a leading national, New York- headquartered, non-profit organization which links science, economics and law to create innovative, economically viable solutions to today's environmental problems. Student interns work directly with experts in science, law, and economics, in addition to other environmental professionals, and play an active role in helping build strong environmental policy. Intern duties include writing articles and press releases, coordinating mass mailings, researching trends and Generating story ideas for the media.

Environmental Law Institute

The Environmental Law, Institute, a national nonprofit research, publishing and education organization, accepts applications for internships in ELI's Research Division. Interns will work with projects involving natural resource protection and pollution prevention, including: hazardous waste, wetland law and policy, international environmental policy, economic incentive programs, medical waste, environmental enforcement, and various training courses and workshops.

The Environmental Protection Agency is responsible for the execution and enforcement of federal laws that protect the environment. The Environmental Agency offers several internships throughout the year: The Environmental Associate Program (application deadline for summer is February 25); National Network f(v Environmental Management Studies (applications accepted beginning Fall 1994); and EPA Management Intern Program (canceled for 1994). Food Research & Action Center

FRAC is a private, non-profit, public interest law firm and advocacy center focused on the hunger problem in the US. We monitor and respond to legislative and administrative changes to the Federal food-assistance Programs (school lunch and breakfast, summer food, food stamps, and maternal and child health programs). We offer a multidimensional approach of legal representation, policy analysis, research, grassroots activities and public information, Interns are engaged in researching, writing, assisting staff attending congressional hearings and coalition meetings and reporting findings.

Fund for Democracy and Development

The Fund is a nonprofit organization that manages transportation of humanitarian assistance to the former Soviet Union. The fund is operating a nationwide transportation and logistics system for the collection and shipping of in-kind donations from individuals, grassroots organizations, corporations and voluntary organizations. US Government funds are used to pay for a large portion of these logistic and transportation costs. This aspect of the Fund's activity is managed by former senior military transportion logistic experts. Opportunities are available to assist the transportation logistics team as they coordinate humanitarian aid shipments, research program-related projects, and publish a nationally distributed newsletter.

Greenpeace

Greenpeace, USA is a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to preserving the earth. Greenpeace focuses public attention on the threat of giobal warming and related atmospheric problems, such as ozone depletion, and acid rain. Interns work on ocean ecology and toxic or nuclear disarmament campaigns. Internship duties include research, information gathering and administrative tasks.

Guatemala Partners

Guatemala Partners educates people in the United States about the economic, social, military, cultural and human rights crisis in Guatemala, and raises funds for grassroots-initiated projects there. We fund small scale projects for economic development, agricultural production, leadership training, health care and emergency relief. Student interns will be fully invovled in all apsects of office operations. Their work will include: monitoring development projects in Guatemala, maintaining our in-house library, drafting or editing funding proposals to foundations, developing land implementing, out outreach programs for churches, and office administration.

The Committee also oversees legislation relating to animal, plant and dairy industries, farm credits, human nutrition, home economics and ruaral development. The House Committee on Energy and Commerce administers legislation relating to interstate and foreign commerce, the exploration, production and regulation of energy resources, biomedical research, securities and exchanges, consumer affairs and production and travel and tourism. House Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries

The House Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries provides legislative administration of oceanography, fisheries, and wildlife. The Environmental and Energy Study Conference is the largest legislative organization in the US Congress; provides members with objective analysis of environmental, energy, and natural resources issues before Congress.

The House Subcommittee on Health and the Environment Internship is not a research policy making internship, but rather provides the opportunity to see what a subcommitte does. The internship is a learning experience and the intern will attend hearings and mark-ups as well as provide general office support.

IPS has drawn from and helped guide the civilizing citizen movements of our time--for civil liberties and rights, for women's liberation and environmental protection, for peace and economic justice. Internships with IPS provide endless opportunities to meet people in the activist world, to develop individual ideas, and to work in an intellectually challenging environment. Institute of International Education

The Institute-of intemational Education is a private non-profit educational organization with its headquarters in New York, and eight divisions in Washington, DC. The IIE Washington interns work with the International Visitor Program, sponsored by the United States Information Agency (USIA). Through its contractual relationship with USIA, the IIE Professional Exchange Programs staff designs and implements programs for approximately 600 participants annually. Interns assist with the development and implementation of programs for international visitors participating in group and individual programs, and intern assignments are quite diverse.

Inter-American Dialogue

The Inter-American Dialogue is a forum for sustained exchange among leaders of the Western Hemisphere and an independent, nonpartisan center for focusing on US-latin American economic and political relations. Responsibilities: To assist the President, Development Officer or Staff associates with research needs. Specific tasks may include research on issues related to US-Latin American relations, such as financial flows, the debt crisis, NAFTA, and trade issues, sovereignty, gender, ethnicity, poverty, education, and editing/writing related to the mentioned areas.

Inter-American Foundation

The Inter-American Foundation (IAF) is a federal government agency created by Congress in 1969 to support the selfhelp efforts of poor people in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Foundation responds directly to initiatives of the poor by supporting grassroots organizations such as agriculture cooperatives, community assocations and small urban enterprises as well as larger grassroots service organizations that work with local groups and provide them with credit, technical assistance, training and marketing services. IAF offers semester non-paid student volunteer positions thoughout the organization including the following departments: Office of programs and Office of learning and Dissemination.

InterAction

American Council of voluntary International Action. InterAction is the leading coalition of US private and voluntary organizations. Its diverse group of member agencies work on a broad range of international humanitarian issues including long-term development, disaster relief, refugee protection, assistance and resettlement, public policy and building a constituency for development assistance through education of the American public. Interns work with a program officer in on of the program areas. Duties vary according to each area.

International Center

The International Center is a Washington, DC based non-profit organization focusing its attention on the promotion of democratic movements in developing countries, peaceful resolutions to regional conflict, and small scale development. To accomplish these goals, the Center has divided itself into regional Commissions, effecting US foreign policy toward, Russia, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Student interns work- on one of the Commissions. Interns can expect their assignments to involve any of the following activities: attending congressional hearings or meetings sponsored by other governmental or nongovernmental organizations; preparing briefing books for delegations travelling overseas; conducting research at the nearby Library of Congress, as well as clerical and administrative duties.

International City Management Association

The International City/County Management Association (ICMA) is the professional and educational association for appointed administrators in local government. ICMA has worked to strengthen the quality of local government through publications, training programs, and research and information services. The Environmental Internship will work with communities across the country to identify successful approaches to managing, financing, and winning public support for environmental projects. Interns will recruit speakers and create promotional materials for regional conferences on solid and hazardous waste management, Superfund, and other environmental issues.

International Food Policy Research Institute

The goal of IFPRI is to identify and analyze alternative national and international strategies and policies for meeting world food needs with particular emphasis on low income countires and on the poor groups in those countries. lnterns work with a Research Fellow or Research Assistant in a specific project that could include data collection, processing and analysis, and review of literature.

International Human Rights Law Group

The International Human Rights Law Group is a nonpartisan, public interest organization that promotes and protects human rights and international human rights law. Internships are available for undergraduate students with an interest in communications or international law. lnterns monitor human rights situations in designated countries or regions, attend and summarize various meetings in the Washington community, research and prepare memoranda on particular projects and perform general clerical duties. Hours are flexible, with a minimum of 16 hours a week and are unpaid positions.

International Technology Consultants

ITC is a Washington-based consulting firm dealing with telecommunications, information technology and broadcasting in Eastern Europe, the former USSR and Latin America. We are looking for motivated individuals for a unique internship opportunity. While internships are unpaid, a small stipend may be available to qualified applicants. We are seeking graduate or advanced undergraduates students for internships to assist with current projects: 1) research and writing for our two monthly journals-The Eastern European and Soviet Telecom Report and the Latin American Telecom Report. 2) substantive research and writing on in-depth studies of telecommunications policy frameworks, markets and business opportunities in Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the former Soviet republics.

The student will be given a work load that includes research and writing assignments in support of the mission of the agency. The Office of Industries, the largest Commission office, has a diverse staff of more than 90 professional trade analysts. They have experience in business administration, the industrial sciences, and economics. International Voluntary Services, Inc. (IVS) seeks an AIDS-Prevention Program Intern. The hours will be two full days. The AIDS-Prevention Program Intern will work directly with the AIDS Program Administrator. National Coalition Against the Misuse of Pesticides

NCAMP was formed to focus public attention on serious public health, environmental and economic problems associated with use and misuse of pesticides. NCAMP is dedicated to pesticide safety and the promotion of safer, non-chemical alternatives. Intern will be required to do library research for newsletter articles and other publications, deal with the public on general or specific issues, and attend and report on meetings and hearings.

National Conference on Soviet Jewry

The NCSJ's primary goals are to enable Jews to emigrate from the former USSR without obstacle and to ensure that those Jews who choose to remain be allowed full access to their religious heritage. The Washington office, which employs five full-time staffmembers, works closely with all branches of the US government, particularly the White House, Department of State, Congress, and the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE). The Natural Resources Council of america is an association of national and regional organizations concerned with sound management of natural resources in public interest. The NRCA is an umbrella group for 80 environmental organizations.

Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy is an international non-profit organization committed to preserving biological diversity by protecting natural lands and the life the harbor. The Government Relations intern provides legislative and administrative support to the Government Relations Staff. Responsibilites include: attending congressional hearings and reporting on those events; tracking environmental legislation; providing research support as needed; answering telephones; processing mail, and providing other support as needed.

New Forests Project

The New Forests Project promotes self-help solutions to rural poverty deforestation by providing individuals in the developing world with seeds for fast growing multipurpose trees. Our internship program is structured to accommodate the needs of both the student intern and the organization. Various research topics are available for students to explore.



Organization of American States

The Organization of American States works on a variety of issues concerning Inter-American relations, including political, economic and social issues. Interns work with a senior professional and are researching and compiling information. Work on a variety of issues--political, economic or social; concerned with Inter-American relations. Intemships have the following deadlines: Fall-June 15 (After Labor Day-mid December), Winter/Spring-November 1 (Late January-early May) and Summer-March 15 (First week in June-mid August). A good command of two of the four official languages of the OAS--English, French, Portuguese and Spanish, preferably English and Spanish-is necessary.

Overseas Development Council

ODC fosters an understanding of how development relates to a much changed US domestic and international policy agenda and helps shape the new course of global development cooperation. ODC's programs focus on three main issues: the challenge of political and economic transitions and the reform of development assistance programs; the development dimensions of international global problems; and the implications of development for US economic security. Internship responsibilities include researching, analyzing data and monitoring Congressional hearings.

Overseas Private Investment Corporation

The Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) is a small Federal acency of 160 employees. Since 1971, OPIC has served as the key Federal agency for encouraging mutually beneficial American business investment in the world's developing nations. OPIC provides qualified investors with project financing, investment insurance, and a variety of investor services in more than 140 developing nations and emerging economies throughout the world. OPIC encourages American overseas private investment in sound business projects thereby improving US global competitiveness, creating American jobs and increasing US exports. Panos Institute

Panos-Washington is an independent, non-profit organization that provides information resources on sustainable development issues throughout the Americas. Panos collaborates with non-governmental organizations and Journalists from developing countries on issues of environment, development, health, and social justice. Intern duties include: research, writing, survey development and analysis, networking with regional and national partners, seminar production, training design, and curriculum development.

Partners of the Americas

Dedicated to promoting economic and social development throughout the Western hemisphere. Citizens in the US are paired to citizens in Latin America and share skills and expertise.

Peace Action

Interns may work for the Peace, Economy, Disarmament, or Membership Departments. They must work at least 32 hours per week and will receive $15/day as a stipend. Interns research, write per form basic office duties as necessary, and a enjoy a high degree of interaction with colleagues and grassroots activists around the nation.

Peace Corps/Office of Personnel

The mission ofthe Peace Corps is to promote world peace. The Peace Corps three goals are: 1) To help the people of interested countries and areas in meeting their need for trained men and women. 2) To help
promote a better understanding of americans on the part ofthe peoples served. 3) To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of americans.

Population Action International

Population Action international is a private, non-profit public interest organization which conducts public policy research and promotes action to slow world population growth. Population Action International is committed to making high quality reproductive health care easily available in every community by the end of this decade ensuring that women become full partners in the development of their communities, and building a global commitment to sustainable development.

Population Institute

The Population Institute is the world's largest grassroots non-profit organization specializing in global population issues. It seeks to bring the world's population into blance with its resources and environment by mobilizing the needed response to the developing world's urgent pleas for voluntary birth contral assistance. Future Leaders of the World (FLW's) are an integral part ofthe Population Institute staff. They work with dedicated and seasoned professionals in our Capitol Hill headquarters to educate the public and the US Congress about the impact of overpopulation on such issues as the environment, poverty, political stability and human suffering. FLW's gain hands-on experience in advocacy, grassroots organizing, fundraising, media, and international relations.

Population Reference Bureau

The Population Reference Bureau is a private, nonprofit organization which gathers, interprets, and disseminates information on population dynamics and their public-policy implications, globally and in the United States. Interns conduct research, write reports, and monitor congressional and federal agency hearings on population issues. Interns also help produce and distribute materials for policy makers in developing countries.

Population Resource Center

The Population Resource Center, a sixteen year old non-profit public policy organization which acts as a bridge between the policy making community and the demographic research community, is seeking an intern. Duties and responsibilities include research and writing of executive Summaries, conducting foundation research on international and domestic issues, administrative duties related to Congressional programs amon- others. Full or Part-time.



RCG/Hagler, Bailey, Inc.

RCG/Hagier, Bailey's Utility Services Group offers strategic, operational, regulatory planning and specialized project services to help the utility industry turn the challenges of the future to its advantage. The firm has provided counsel to a wide varitey of clients in the United States and abroad, from large investor owned utilities to small municiple and public power authorities.

Rachel Carson Council, Inc.

The Rachel Carson Council was established to advance Miss Carson's causes and philosophy by promoting interest in and knowledge of our environment; encouraging enlightened conservation measures; and serving as a clearing house of information for scientists and laymen. The focus ofthe Council is chemical contamination, especially the pesticide problem explored in Silent Spring.

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy

The Rails -to-Trails Conservancy is devoted to converting abandoned railroad rights of way into trails for public use. In partnership with citizen groups, public agencies, railroads and others, the Conservancy is working to build a transcontinental trailway network that will preserve for the future of our nation's spectacular railroad corridor system. Interns research issues affecting rails-to-trails conversions, provide information to local citizen advocates and park- officials, answer requests for assistance and perform administrative tasks.

Renew America

Renew America is a nationawide clearinghouse for environmental solutions. By seeking out and promotmg successful programs, Renew America offers positive, constuctive modies to help communities meet environmental challenges. We advance solutions to environmental problems by encouraging the replication of successful environmental initiatives. Interns work on identifying successful environmental programs nationwide on a variety of topics including air pollution reduction, food safety, hazardous materials reduction and recycling, ground water protection, surface water and wetlands protection and wildlife conservation.

Resources for the Future

Resources for the Future is an independnet non-proft research institute addressing natural resources and environmental issues. RFF creates, refines and disseminates knowledge about the relationship between people and their natural environment, the products and services derived from the world's basic resources, and the effects of production and consumption on environmental quality and the quality of life.

Ruder Finn, Inc.

The Washington office of Ruder Finn, one of the country's largest and oldest independent public relations agencies offers an exciting one semester internship in public relations and global public affairs. Public relations program participatns will play a vital role in one of Ruder Finn's work groups helping to service a wide variety of accounts ranging from corporation to visual and performing arts institutions to non-profit organizations and professional associations. Global public affairs program participants will play a vital role on the RF/GPA team, helping to service a wide variety of international accounts ranging from foreign countries to multinational corporations and international organizations.



Save Our Streams/lzaak Walton League of America

The Izaak Walton League of america is one of the nation's oldest and most respected nonprofit conservation organizations. Major areas of league interest and expertise include enhancement of water quality, portection of wetlands and public lands, fish and wildlife habitat mangement and outdoor ethics. The Save Our Streams Program (SOS) is the volunteer river protection program of the League. The SOS intern position is unpaid and provides professional experience only. Job responsibilites include: Writing research articles for the national SOS newsletter, researching water quality monitoring programs across the US, Researching water quality issues and writing, and designing fact sheets, and attending SOS training work-shops.

Scenic America

Scenic America is a national organization for the preservation and enhancement of the scenic character of America's communities and countrysides. Interns have research projects on special topics and assist senior staff with ongoing work. Requirements: strong writing and research skills, good interpersonal and computer skills. Background in environment and public policy preferred.

Scientists Center for Animal Welfare

SCAW is a non-profit, educational organization that attempts to bring about the responsible and humane treatment of animals used in research, education and testing. To accomplish this goal, the Center encourages the exchange of information regarding animal research issues.

Search for Common Ground

Search for Common Ground is a non-profit organization working to find solutions to divisive domestic and international problems with programs in Russia, the Middle East, and the US. Intern duties include: conference planning, light administrative, travel arrangements, and some research. The more responsible and the skilled the applicant, the more substantive work. Opportunities for individuals interested in track two diplomacy and conflict resolution. Russian studies/language or Middle East studies/Arabic is a plus but not required.

Seed Capital Development Fund

Seed Capital is the North American Representative for the non-profit international development organization, SIDI (Societe d'Investissement et de Developpement). Seed Capital and SIDI help entrepreneurs in under developed countries gain access to loans and skills training. Interns play an integral part in the office, they: research the development projects in countries where SCDF is involved, 2) translate documents (therefore, knowledge of French and/or Spanish is helpful), 3) write letters to important international players in the development field, and 4) help organize events for SCDF, etc.

Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition & Forest

Chairman Patrick Leahy (VT). The Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry is concerned With agriculture and agricultural commodities; inspection of livestock, meat and agriculture products; food stamp programs etc. Subcommittees include Domestic and Foreign Marketing Product Promotion.

Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works

The Committee deals with environmental legislation on the Senate side. Interns have the opportunity to track legislation, attend hearings and summarize testimony, and work with professional staff on specific topics such as clean air and Superfund.

Share Our Strength

Share Our Strength works to alleviate hunger today and prevent hunger tomorrow. SOS mobilizes creative professionals and volunteers to contribute their skills and resources to a variety of programs. We distribute grants, educate the public about hunger, and organize community outreach programs. Internship involves research about agencies that have applied for funding, some general administrative/organizational help, computer Work, helping respond to inquiries about what SOS funds and how to apply for grants, and other unpredictable but always interesting projects.

Small Business Administration/International Trade Office

The International Trade Office promotes US small business trade in other countries. In addition, there is interaction with the private sector and government agencies. Intern duties include some general office duties, but the student is assigned to a staff member and will have the opportunity to work- on specific analysis projects.

Smithsonian-Environmental Research Center

SERC is engaged in the long-term study of the Rhodes River watershed and its estuary. This research program includes both aquatic and terrestrial studies and is concerned with human impact upon the functioning ecosystem. Interns engage in and become familiar with the techniques of environmental research. There are three deadlines for the Work/Learn program in environmental studies, which are the following: Fall-July Ist, Spring-December Ist, Summer-March Ist.

Smithsonian-National Museum ofnatural History

The National Museum of natural History is a museum dedicated to different disciplines in the natural sciences. Interns work- in a variety of departments, including exhibits, education, and scientific illustration, as well as assist curators and museum specialists on museum projects. Internships are available at various levels in the natural science disciplines that are currently being pursued in the museum.

Smitlisonian-National Zoological Park

Research on understanding of animal behavior and health, particularly endangered species. The National Zoo offers traineeships for twelve weeks during the fall or summer. Students are aksed to apply several months in advance.

Society of American Foresters

National organization representing all segments of the forestry profession; objectives are to advance the science, technology, education and practice of professional forestry.

Society for Animal Protective Legislation

Nonprofit organization which keeps its 14,000 correspondents appraised of current developments in legislation for the protection of animals.

Society for International Development

The Society for International Development is a professional association for people with an interest in international economic, political, and social development. The society promotes the aims of world development and encourages the exchange of ideas and experiences in this area. Intern duties are determined by current office projects, but include editing the weekly newsletter, Development Connections.

Southeast Asia Resource Action Center

The Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARCA) is a national organization formed to educate the general public about the refugee situation in Southeast Asia and assist public and private agencies in meetings the needs of Southeast Asia refugees, SEARC's major program areas include: Public Education and Advocacy, Leadership Development, Community Empowerment, and International Development and Reconstruction. Internships are escpecially suited to those with an interest and academic background in international affairs, political science, history, ethnography,, journalism, or social service.

Sport Fishery Research Program

The Sport Fishery Research Program helps finance graduate-level training of promising fishery scientists; supports ecological research on aquatic ecosystems, water quality requirements of aquatic life and conservation fisheries.

St. Maxens and Co.

St. Maxens & Company, an international trade consulting firm, offers paid internships during each academic semester and during the summer. The company's work includes preparing petitions on behalf of clients for executive branch agencies, ongoing monitoring of US trade policy, and weekly reports analyzing congressional and Administration trade and environmental initiatives. The intern would be responsible for assembling a daily compendium of trade related press reports. In addition, the position calls for a substantial amount of administrative and "gopher"work Interns must work a minimum of 2O hours each week and are paid $5.50 an hour. We are a small firm that offers a friendly atmosphere and significant access to the company's professionals.



UN Development Programme

The United Nation's Development Programme is the World's largest grant development organization; emphasis on its supported activities is on permanent enhancement of self-reliant development. The Washington office serves as a liason office responding to inquiries from the United States Congress, Agency of International Development, Department of State, other Government agencies, and the media. Intern duties include responding to telephone inquiries, conducting research and performing, administrative tasks.

US Agency for International Development

The mission of the Agency for International Development is to administer economic assistance programs that combine an American tradition of international concern and generosity with the active promotion of America's national interests. Positions are available in a variety of disciplines, including public health, accounting, financial and business management, agriculture, environmental science, economics, and international relations and personnel management.

US Business and Industrial Council

The US Business and Industrial Council is an association of over 800 companies, ranging in size from very small firms to Fourtune 500 companies. The Council represnets the interests of business in general, but it speaks in particular for the needs of medium-sized companies, often privately held or family-owned, whose viewpoint does not find full expression in the work of other business organizations. The Council presents an attractive opportunity for students with an interest in business, economics, law, international trade, and US-Japan relations. Internships are available to work under the guidance of the President, Executive Director, and Director of Government Relations.

US Catholic Conference

The US Catholic Conference is the public policy agency of the National Catholic Conference of bishops. USCC is organized around five committees: Communications, Education, Campaign for Human Development, Domestic Policy and International Policy, Unlike the NCCB committees whose members are bishops, exclusively, these committees include clergy, religious and lay people. Internships are offered in the areas of migration, refugee services and policy making. Duties depend upon the needs ofthe organization.

US Chamber of Commerce/international Division

The US Chamber of commerce is primarily involved in trade policy analysis. The Office of european Affairs is directly responsible for monitoring events in Europe, including the emerging market economics of the former Soviet Bloc countries, keeping its members abreast of the developments of the European single market program and its implications for US business, Intern responsibilities include: Daily newspaper clippings, research projects, assisting with EC publications, attending and reporting on Congressional hearings related to Western Europe, and miscellaneous research projects as needed.

International Economic Policy East Asia and Pacific/Office of pacific Basin is responsible for providing information and advice to the business community regarding trade and investment with Southeast Asia, Austalia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. We have a special need for an intern to serve as our Assistant Southeast Desk Officer. Intern duties include working with our desk officers; the intern would prepare reports on economic and commercial conditions in the region and/or counsel US companies regarding trade or investment opportunities, drawing upon extensive background information available to us.

The Office of Latin America at ITA/IEP is responsible for business consulting for firms that want to trade with Latin America, for Trade Promotion in Latin America, and for international economic analysis. Interns in the office are responsible for assisting the country desk officers in their responsibilites. Interns will be assigned to a specific country/countries and field business inquiries about exporting to their assigned countries, write an article for the U.S. Department of Commerce magazine, Business America, analyze economic policies of those countries, and prepare other documents for Department use as required. Interns do some administrative work, but we try to keep that to a minimum. Interns usually work five days a week, although other arrangements can be made.

US Dept of Commerce/International Trade Administration

The Office of the Pacific Basin, Korea and Taiwan Division is responsible for trade policy and export promotion functions pertaining to the Asia Pacific region. The intern will help ensure the smooth functioning of the office's day-to-day programs, including advising business callers about Asian markets and business regulations; preparing telegrams to US embassies in the region; drafting correspondence and memoranda for senior Commerce officials; and providing other assistance to the country of special projects, including preparations for possible high-level meetings and negotiations, and writing articles for Department publications.

Office of energy, Environment, and Infrastructure. Intern will develop strategy and procedures to indentify at an early stage projects globally which US companies could use to pursue funding through Japan's Office of Development Assistance.

US Dept of Education/Office of Personnel

The US Department of Education establishes policy and administers most federal assistance to eudation programs and institutions. Interns work in one of the following areas: accounting, elementary education, grants and contracts, post-secondary education, research, and clerical.

US Dept of Energy

The Department of Energy has the responsibility for ensuring that the US has sufficient energy to meet its future demands; for describing energy demands; and for planning and implementing programs and projects to move the country from its current state of energy management to the energy environment of the future. The student volunteer intern program provides opportunities for students to explore career options and gain work experience in their area of academic pursuit. Students may work a schedule that is agreed to by the agency and the academic institution.

US Dept of HUD/Office of Economic Development

The Office of Economic Development (OED) was established in July 1990 to replace the Office of Urban Development Action Grants (UDAG). The purpose of the office is to provide a focal point for HUD's various economic development programs and activities. The mission of the office is to manage these activities, including the formulation of policies and legislative proposals and the administration of economic development programs. Special projects/assignments will be given to the intern to meet the needs of the Office of Economic Development (OED). Overall assignments may cover a variety of subject matter and level of work effort.

US Dept of State/US AID/Center for Information Evaluation

The Center for Development Information and Evaluation is a branch of the Department of State responsible for managing economic and social development assistance to third world countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. CDIE supports studies into the performnace of US A D programs abroad.

US Information Agency

The United States Information Agency is an independent foreign affairs agency within the executive branch ofthe US government. USIA's mission is to explain and support American foreign policy and promote US national interests through a wide range of overseas information programs. Qualified college students work in elements within the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Bureau of Policy and Progams, the Office of Research, the Office of Public Liaison, the Office of the General Counsel, and the English Language Programs Office.

US Public Interest Research Group

US PIRG is the national lobbying office for state PIRGs across the country. PIRGs are nonpartisan, nonprofit research and advocacy organizations that work on consumer, government reform, energy and environmental issues. US PIRG lobbies in Congress and before executive agencies, prepares research reports, and monitors corporate and governmental action. Student interns will work under the supervision of US PIRG's legal and professional advocacy staff in the following areas: representing US PIRG on specific issues before legislative and administrative bodies; preparing testimony for government hearings; conducting legal research; and working with media and national and local advocacy groups.

US Trade Representative/Office of the US Trade Rep.

The Office of the United States Trade Representative formulates United States trade policy and conducts negotiations with international trading partners. The internship program is a volunteer program, implemeted throughout the entire calendar year. In the past, the majority of student interns have concentrated in the following fields: Business and finance, economics, international relations, and law. Most assignments fall into these categories: research, writing, analyses, statistics, briefing books, and reporting on hearings and meetings. Several examples of past assignments are: prepared responses to correspondence, conducted research for reports such as update of US-Japan trade issues, organized materials for advisory committee hearings, investigated the impact ofchanges on a country's political economy, and compiled data for a report on the discrepancies between US and Taiwan trade statistics.

US-China Business Council

The US-China Business Council is a membership trade association for US businesses doing trade with China. There are internships available working on our magazine and in our reserach department. Some Chinese language or China studies are required. Internships are nonpaid. Interns interested in working on the magazine (The China Business Review) should contact Pamela Baldinger, Editor-in-Chief.

Ukrainian National Information Service

UNIS' intern position allows students to learn about current issues and developments in Eastern Europe in general, and Ulkraine specifically, while at the same time experience how Washington's government and private sector operate. Interns are exposed to different aspects of Washington (i.e ' Congressional hearings, State Department briefings, press conferences, seminars, and educational forums).

Union of Concerned Scientists

The Union of concemed Scientists is dedicated to advancing responsible public policies in areas where technology plays a critical role. UCS has created a unique alliance between many of the nation's leading scientists and thousands of committed citizens. Internships in UCS's Washington, DC office requires 40 hours of work per week and last a minimum of three months. UCS offers 3 internships each semester and during the summer. These positions are: Media and Outreach intern, Outreach intern, and Arms Control intern. A stipend is available.

United Nations Association

The United Nations Association of the USA is a national organization dedicated to strengthening the United Nations system and to enhancing United States participation in international institutions. General intern functions include research, writing of papers or newsletter articles and attendance at Congressional hearings.

University Research Corporations/Center for Concern

URC/CHS helps business and government clients solve tough problems through the application of innovative services and products. Their main concern is people--defining, managing, educating and continuously improving the way they work, communicate and live. Currently, they are serving clients in the broad areas of training, human resource management, leadership and management development, health education and communication and international development. Interns are able to work for the various programs including the Health Education and Communications Group, the International Development Group or with Primary Health Care Operations Research, which is a USAID funded project to help developing countires find ways to deliver primary health care services more effectively.



Visions in Action

Visions in Action is an international nonprofit organization founded in 1988 out of the conviction that there is much that we can learn from-and contribute to-the developing world by working as part of a community of volunteers committed to achieving social justice in the urban setting. Visions coordinates volunteer internships with nonprofit organizations operating in urban or rural areas of developing countries. Visions in Action offers the following internships: International Administrative Intern, Fundraising Intern, International Research Intern, Public Relations Intern, and Recruitment Intern.



Washington International Trade Association

WITA is a non-profit membership organization which provides members a series of informational programs on international trade policy and practice. These programs serve as a neutral forum for the exchange of views on key international trade issues. Two internships are available for the summer.

Washington Office on Africa

The Washington Office on Africa is a church and trade union sponsored advocacy organization that works toward influencing US foreign policy towards Africa. WOA seeks to support grassroots initiatives that foster peace and political economic justice in Africa. Interns should be aquainted with African issues and with US foreign policy. Interns are accepted for the Spring, Summer, and Fall terms.

Washington Peace Center

The Washington Peace Center is a grassroots multi-issue peace andjustice organization working for nonviolent social change in the DC area. Intems help us organize demonstrations and educational activities, write brochures and articles for our monthly newspaper and participate in all aspects of the organization.

Washington Workshops Foundation

The Washington Work-shops Foundation organizes environmental seminars for high school students around Washington. Topics range from environmental issues to diplomacy. We are extrememly interested in interns.

White House/Office of Presidential Personnel

The White House has a number of offices that offer internship opportunities for students wishing to learn more about the Executive Branch of the US government. White House interns are given opportunities to explore the different attractions of Washington, DC and to attend selected White House functions. The White House offers internships in the following departments: Cabinet Affairs, Chief of Staff, Communications, Correspondence, Office of the Executive Clerk, First Lady's Office, General Counsel, Intergovernmental Affairs, Legislative Affairs, Management/Administration/Operations, Political Affairs, Presidential Personnel, public Liaison, Scheduling and Advance, Staff Secretary, and the Visitor's Office.The White House has a very active intern program and can accomodate most student schedules.

Wilderness Society

The Wilderness Society is an environmental conservation organization dedicated to educating the public, testifying before government, analyzing decisions and sponsoring environmental conferences.

Wildlife Habitat Enhancement Council

WHEC provides corporations with technical assistance in initiating, implementing, and evaluating wildlife projects on their lands. It encourages development of programs that are ecologically and historically appropriate for the site that also reflect the interests and goals of its clients. An important component of the WHEC program is employee pride and respect from the community. Internships allow students to assist with research and program development, corporate opportunities with the Endangered Species Act and environmental education.

Wildlife Society

The Wildlife Society is an international nonprofit scientific and educational organization comprised of professionals serving the resource management fields, especially wildlife ecology and management Internship responsibilities include researching conservation issues, preparing background information for use in testimony or comments, attending briefings and floor debates and assisting the preparation of society publications.

Women Strike for Peace

Women Strike for Peace was founded in 1961 when women, fearful of the effects of radioactive fallout on children, called a one-day nationwide strike to protest the atomic atmospheric testing being conducted by the US and USSR. Our major priorities are the nuclear arms race, arms control, and disarmament; intervention in third world countries; and related foreign policy matters. Interns working with Women Strike for Peace are involved in lobbying, attending Congressional hearings, and participating in coalition meetings and various other briefings. Office and clerical tasks are shared among the staff.

Women's International League for Peace and Freedom

The Wonien's International League for Peace and Freedom was founded in 1915 and has a membership of 110 organized branches nationwide and internationally. WILPF seeks to achieve by peaceful means those political, economic, social and psychological conditions which assure peace, freedom and justice througout the world. Because we use a participatory, feminist mode of decision -making, interris learn valuable group process skills and benefit from an open and supportive working environment. Clerical work is minimal, allowing interns to become truly involved with the project's substance.

World Bank

The World Bank promotes economic and social progress in developing nations by helping raise productivity so that people live better lives.

The World Federalist Association, is a non-profit, non-govemment organization working ot educate the general public and policy makers of the world about the concept of world federation and UN reform. We offer five types of internship positions to college/graduate students and recent graduates who possess a strong interest in global issues such as: international peace-keeping and disarmament, environmental preservation, protecting human rights,and world economic justice. Interns are employed throughout the year, normally for a semester duration.

World Resources Institute

The World Resources Institute is a research and policy institute that helps governments, the private sector, and environmental and development organizations. Some of its main concerns are human and natural resources, economic growth, and environmental integrity. Interns are primarily engaged in substantive research and writing.

World Wildlife Fund

WWF's work is driven by a passion for nature, grounded in science and shaped by an understanding that addressing human needs is the key to all successful long-term conservation efforts. WWF's mission is simple and direct: the conservation of nature.

World Wildlife Fund/Traffic USA

Owned by World Wildlife Fund but independent from it; Trade Records of Flora and Fauna in Commerce is recognized by governments as best source for scientific data monitoring trade in wild animals and plants, and products made from them.

WorldWIDE Network: World Women in Development

WorldWIDE Network is an international grass roots organization dedicated to helping women at all levels of society in their efforts in environmental resource management and sustainable development. Interns would assist with administrative duties.
