Jeff Rehbach

Director of Choral Music

Special Projects and Policy Advisor
for Library and Information Services (LIS)

As Director of Choral Music at Middlebury College, I conduct the Middlebury College Chamber Singers and the College-Community Chorus. The 60-member College-Community Chorus is open to all interested singers, and performs concerts each semester, including the annual Community Thanksgiving Celebration. Recent performances have included music of G. F. Handel, John Rutter, Stephen Paulus, Z. Randall Stroope, and Randall Thompson. The Chamber Singers is the College’s official performing ensemble, specializing in a cappella performances of music from the 15th century to 21st centuries; in addition to presenting fall and spring concerts, the 24-voice auditioned ensemble sings at Fall Family Weekend, Homecoming and Baccalaureate Services. Each year, its members learn 30-40 new works.  On May 1, 2005, I conducted a performance of the Ernest Bloch’s “Avodath Hakodesh” (Sacred Service), sung in Hebrew with both choirs accompanied by the College Orchestra, in celebration of Hillel’s 50th anniversary at Middlebury College.

As Policy Advisor for Library and Information Services, I edit the LIS sections of the College Handbook, work on copyright policy and interpretation, and serve as Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) agent for the campus. From  2002 until 2005  I served as Special Projects Manager and then Facilities Manager for the Dean of Library and Information Services.  My principle responsibilities were planning the new library, including the move of 700,000 items and 70 staff from 7 campus locations to the new library in early summer 2004From 1997-2001 I served as Acting Director and then Director of Information Technology Services at Middlebury College. Prior to that I was Director of Computing Services and Head of User Services within ITS. I was Systems Librarian for the College Libraries, with responsibility for supporting computing operations throughout the library and administration of our Data Research Associates (DRA) system from 1985-1996. I originally came to Middlebury as Music Librarian in 1981.

Music shapes my life. As Chamber Singers director, I lead students in three concerts each year: a program of renaissance and 20th-century a cappella choral music each fall; a spring concert; and a special concert graduation weekend that includes favorite music of the graduating seniors in Chamber Singers. As director of the College-Community Chorus, I direct this 60-voice ensemble that combines members of local towns and College students, staff and faculty together in annual Thanksgiving and spring concert programs.  As a choral singer and coach, I’ve participated in many ensembles, including Early Music Vermont, the Vermont Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Chamber Chorus, the Vermont Millennium Music Festival, the Middlebury College Musical Players, and the Middlebury Community Chorus. With my wife Meredith I assist musically with worship at Memorial Baptist Church in Middlebury, Vermont, and conduct its choir. For 15 years I led the choir at the Middlebury Congregational Church, where since 1996 I've led the annual Middlebury open reading of Handel's Messiah at Christmastime, bringing the community together as we lift our voices in song.

I attended Cornell University (Master of Arts, Musicology, 1982; Bachelor of Arts, Music, 1975) and Syracuse University (Master of Library and Information Studies, 1981). Additional information: My resume
