Mount Independence, in Orwell, Vermont, across Lake Champlain from Fort Ticonderoga, was the largest Revolutionary War fortress built by the Americans, and for a year and a half was the home of several thousand American, British and German soldiers. It is the final resting place for several hundred of these men. By the fall of 1777 when the rocky 350 acre plateau was finally abandoned, the complex included a picket fort, barracks, a large hospital, innumerable soldiers' huts, officers' housing, several blockhouses and artillery batteries, and scores of other storehouses and shops with which to support an army. Since then, the site has been left virtually undisturbed.
Now under the care of the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation, the Fort Ticonderoga Association, and the Nature Conservancy, this historic and beautiful site is finally receiving the consideration it deserves. Seven miles of hiking trails take the visitor past impressive overlooks of Lake Champlain and Fort Ticonderoga, interpretive signs, and archaeological remains. In 1996, the State of Vermont opened a new Visitor Center which tells the story of Mount Independence and exhibit many of the artifacts discovered on the Mount and in the waters around it.
The Mount Independence Coalition, in recognition of the significance of Mount Independence in natural and human history, was created in 1989 to assist in raising private and public support for the site. The activities of this nonprofit tax exempt organization include assisting in the design and construction of exhibits and signs, maintaining and improving trails, working with other private and public organizations on interpretation, development and research on the Mount, and helping to develop and present educational programs.
