Public Meeting on Mount Independence Plan

Orwell, Vermont-There will be a public meeting to discuss the cultural resource management plan for Mount Independence State Historic Site on Tuesday, May 13, 1997 at 7:00 pm at the Orwell Town Hall. Archaeologists from the consulting firm of R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc. of Maryland will present the draft plan and the public is invited to comment.

The plan addresses several management concerns including future research directions, public programming and interpretation on the trails, and the overall preservation, enhancement and protection of the archaeological resources of this important Revolutionary War fort site.

The plan is funded in part by grants from the Vermont Community Foundation and the Kelsey Trust, and is part of a larger federally-funded ISTEA (Intermodal Surface Transportation Enhancement Act) project to assess and improve the current hiking trail system. The final cultural resource management plan is due July 1, 1997 and will assist trail planners in developing a trail master plan for the site.

The public meeting is sponsored by the State of Vermont, Division for Historic Preservation, the Fort Ticonderoga Association and the Orwell Advisory Committee.

For more information about the project or the meeting please contact Audrey Porsche at (802) 759-2412.
