Courses Taught

I've been at Middlebury since 1989. I teach a selection of courses ranging from introductory major and non-majors courses (The Dynamic Earth, The Ocean Floor, Earthquakes and Volcanoes), through upper level courses (Bedrock Geology of Vermont, Marine Geology, Geophysics and Sedimentary Rocks).

Research Interests

My research is primarily field based and is aimed at understanding how currents redistribute sediment at the bottom of large lakes, rivers and oceans. My projects focus on understanding the formation of sedimentary bedforms within this wide range of localities and water depths conditions. In conjunction with investigation their formation, larger issues are addressed such as the amount of resuspension of bottom sediments, their long-term nature, and climatic history. I have focused my research on sedimentary bedforms such as furrows, drifts, mudwaves and deep sea fans. Three main regions my research has been directed towards are large lakes (Lake Ontario and Lake Champlain), rivers (Hudson and Buffalo Rivers) and ocean sediment drifts (e.g. Bjorn and Gardar sediment drifts), deep-sea fans (e.g. Amazon Fan) and mudwaves (e.g. Argentine Basin). Recently I have been researching Holocene climate variability in Antarctic and within Lake Champlain. I have participated on many ocean research cruises; e.g. Antarctic, south of Iceland near the Reykjanes Ridge, Argentine Basin, and the ODP drill ship to the Amazon Fan.

Recent work on Lake Champlain has yielded a new bathymetric map of the Lake Champlain.
