The Middlebury College Rugby Club had
high spirits going down to Boston on
Saturday to take on Boston University.
Coming off of last fall’s disappointing
lost to URI in the National Territorial,
Middlebury College looked to shake of
the cob webs and start the motors again.
This task seemed to be more difficult
then expected however, for Boston University
scored two quick tries in the first
half. Middlebury appeared sluggish and
lacking in intensity, in part due to
first-game syndrome, in part due to
foreign field conditions, but regardless,
it was clear that Middlebury was not
on top of its game. However after half,
baring few exceptions Middlebury began
to look like the well oiled machine
of years past, scoring seven tries.
Overall it was a fair test, with Boston
University playing hard until the final
whistle, but Middlebury looks to learn
from the match and improve upon their
play next weekend at Williams College.
Spring News
Gino
Evan 'Gino' Mangino was spotted on the Middlebury Campus during senior week and graduation. Welcome back!!
Old Boys Game + Blue and White
Lots of bodies showed up for what was
an exciting alumni game. Epeli Rokotuivekau showed some of the
brilliance that has made him a legend amongst us. Ultimately, the skilled old boys could not match the fittness of the Midd ruggers.
The blue and white was also just as
exciting. Despite the pouring rain, everyone showed up, and for the
first time in a long time, the white team won (of course I was on that
side).

Williams College
Tournament
Middlebury College traveled to
Williams to face the University of Vermont and Williams College in a
three team round-robin style tournament. Middlebury College was
victorious in their first match against Williams College, using a smart
offensive sets and hard nosed defense. In their second game, the
intensity and focus from the first match wasn’t carried over
and Middlebury College fell to UVM. Additionally, UVM lost to Williams
in the third match and through tie breakers Middlebury College was
named round-robin champions.
Middlebury College vs Colgate College:
It was a long day for Middlebury
Rugby, sending three teams to Colgate for a chilly set of
matches.Middlebury started the game off uncharacteristically
unorganized, and by the half were down in a 0-12 hole. Wrought with
inexperience in the back line, Middlebury struggled to put together
many successful plays wide. Additionally, Middlebury-Colgate penalties
tallied 28-4 over the course of the game. However, after 72 minutes of
play, Middlebury finally saw a successful succession of crashes and
distributions, ending with a Trey Stewart (’09) tri and a
successful conversion by Craig Wilson (’07.5). Middlebury
received the ensuing kick off and steadily moved the ball up field
until, with no time remain in the game, Matt Volz (’07)
scored the game tying tri, and Craig Wilson sealed the victory with a
successful conversion.
Season Opener
Middlebury Rugby made the trip down to Yale only
having practiced four days outside to play against a Yale team that had
already played seven games this spring. Middlebury played suprizingly
well considering the circumstances, however, the fitness and practice
of Yale triumphed over Middlebury's individual skills and efforts.
