Instructions for recommendation letters

If I've pointed you to this page, it is because I've agreed to write you a letter of recommendation. Since I've agreed I want you to have the best letter possible. To achieve this, and as part of our agreement, you must do the following.

Provide me with electronic copies of the following documents (sending these in a single e-mail):
  • an unofficial copy of your transcript,
  • a resume (if you have one),
  • all necessary forms, and
  • a list of programs, along with type of program (grad school, REU, etc.) to which you are applying, along with the due dates.

To write the best letter possible, it is best if you respond in writing to the following questions which programs often ask, including them in the file of documents that you provide.
  • How long and in what capacity have I known you? (Give all instances: classes, research, grading, etc.)
  • How have you distinguished yourself? What are your (academic) strengths?
  • How do you match what the program / grad school / internship / etc. is looking for?
  • How does this opportunity meet with your long-term goals?

I need one week notice (preferably two) (with these forms in hand). Also, I prefer to receive the request bundled together much as possible as opposed to receiving another letter request every week for several weeks.

Please inform me of your success! Once you hear from an employer, graduate program, summer program, etc., please let me know, I like to hear good news! Also, let me know what you decide upon and how it goes.
