The Presidents Response to what happened to our website and announcement Board:

Over the past few weeks we have received notice of two acts of vandalism that appear to target Islamic students on campus.  In one incident, the Islamic Society notice board in McCullough was dismantled without permission; information, scripture references and pictures were taken or destroyed.  In a second incident, someone posed as the president of the Islamic Society and had Web Services remove and delete the Islamic Society’s web pages, files, and their account from the College’s web site.

These are disturbing events that strike at the core of a diverse, intellectual community.  As a campus that prizes openness and promotes toleration and understanding of difference, we deplore these acts.

In response, I have asked Dean Ann Hanson and Public Safety to investigate the incidents.  If you have information concerning these events, please let Dean Hanson know, or contact Public Safety directly.  I know that I speak for faculty, staff, and students when I say that we will not tolerate this kind of action on our campus.

Rather, we will do all we can to ensure that Middlebury College is a place where every member of our community is able safely to engage in the exercise of the intellectual life, and where no one is subject to subtle or overt intimidation.
