ASSALAAMU ALAIKUM!
Welcome to Middlebury College.
While many of your specific questions can be answered by the other
pages on this site,
here we try to take a wholistic view of Islamic
life at Middlebury.
Random Things
EVERY MUSLIM
really oughtta know
about applying to Middlebury
College
UNDER SERIOUS CONSTRUCTION!
Academics:
Middlebury is an excellent school and you will leave here a better person,
inshaAllah. Arabic is offered as a language here, and the program is fast developing with a lot of interest shown by students for this language. An excellent Arabic school is held during the summer. You
will have to further much of your Islamic education on your own, but
halaqas have been arranged in the past. A few elders knowledgeable of
Islam are nearby (particularly in Burlington) and are very willing to
provide spiritual guidance. However, they are not readily available
and you will have to seek them out, as they have no affiliation with the
College. All the basic texts (Qur'an, ahadith, fiqh as-Sunnah, books on
morals/manners, guides to prayer, Tafsir al-Qur'an) are available in the
Islamic Center.
Community:
There are about 50 Muslims on the Middlebury campus. Currently, there are
about 8 Muslims who attend jummah each week. There are about 300 Muslim
families in Burlington, as well as Muslim students at Johnson State,
Norwich U, UVM and St. Michael's College (Burlington). There is a Muslim
Student Union at UVM and a new Islamic Society at Williams College.
Food:
Zabiha Halal meat will inshaAllah be available starting November 2005 in Atwater Dining hall at no additional charge. Vegetarian
meals are always an option. Sometimes the seafood is cooked
with alcohol, and you must always ask, even though the dining services
staff is good about labelling the ingredients. You will receive meal
credits for the breakfasts and lunches you miss
during Ramadan. However, the credit will be for only $6.00, and can only
be spent at the Grille, the college eatery/coffee shop/social space. The
credit must be spent the very same day it is earned.
