1999 - 2000 CONSTITUTION

Article I Name
The organization shall be named the Islamic Society of Middlebury College, abbreviated ISMC.

Article II Mission
The purpose of the Islamic Society is to provide a ground for discussion to the people interested in Islam and Islamic issues. Simultaneously, the Society is intended to create a conducive environment for all the Muslim students at Middlebury College to practice and maintain their religion.

Article III Membership
The membership is open to all students and residents of Middlebury who are interested in the teachings of Islam.

Article IV Offices
The office holders of the society will be as follows:
President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer. In the event that there is limited interest in the governance of the Islamic Society, the Secretary position shall be merged with one either the Vice President or Treasurer positions. Together, the position holders will be termed the Executive Committee.
President: Will call, preside and adjourn all meetings. The President is responsible for all the activities
organized by the society.

Vice President: Will officiate in the absence of the President,
establish committees and lead projects on behalf of the society.
Treasurer: Will be responsible for maintaining financial records
and appearing before Finance Committee.
Secretary: Will perform general administrative tasks as well as
lead and/or participate in committees and projects.

Article V Elections
All the office holders will be nominated for one year by the general consensus of its members. In the event of an election, the vote will be decided by a simple majority. The office holders will be nominated in the spring.
In the event that there is limited interest in the governance of the Islamic Society, positions will be filled according to participation and commitment to the Society.
In the event that a member of the Executive Committee fails to perform his/her duties, the other members shall discharge the officer from his/her position with a unanimous vote. Elections to fill the position shall be held as soon as possible.
Voting members are defined as those who participated in an Islamic Society event at least once in the past two terms, receive the society e-mails and weekly telephone messages.

Article VI Meetings
The Society shall meet every Friday for Jum'ah prayer. Participation in the prayer will require members to observe the norms of cleanliness as defined by Islam. A weekly business meeting shall be held following services. Other meetings may be held as desired.
During the holy month of Ramadan, or when there is sufficient interest, there shall be daily or weekly Quranic reading sessions.

Article VII Committees
Other than the Executive Committee, composed of the aforementioned officers, there shall be two committees: Eid Committee and Activism Committee.
The Eid Committee will be composed of members interested in coordinating activities for both Eid ul Fitr and Eid ul Adha. Responsibilites for activities during the month of Ramadan shall also fall under jurisdiction of this committee.
The Activism Committee will be composed of members interested in coordinating activities to educate and involve the Middlebury College community in Islamic issues. These activities may be either political in nature.
The Executive Committee can create other committees as the need arises.

Article VIII Advisers
If a faculty member shows sufficient interest in the Society, as deemed by the Executive committee, he or she shall be made the Adviser of the Islamic Society. Members from the community are also eligible to become Advisers to the Society.

Article IX Affiliation
The Islamic Society of Middlebury College is affiliated with the Muslim Students' Association of North America, and the Islamic Society of Vermont.

Article X Ratification
A. This constitution must be ratified by a two-third majority of the membership.
B. This constitution must be approved by the Student Government Association Constitution Committee.

Article XI Amendments
A. Amendments to this constitution must be approved by two-thirds of the membership.
B. Amendments to this constitution must be approved by the Student Government Association Constitution Committee.
