Final Four v Plattburgh
Panthers overcome slow start;
Shutout UMass-Boston in NCAA, 4-0

Maddie
Winslow put an offensive charge into the Panthers as she
opened the scoring midway through the second period. Midd had
problems solving the UMass goaltender and ended the first period
tied despite a large edge in territorial play and shots (12-2). On
the powerplay in the second Julia Wardwell and Jenna Marotta
got the puck to a streaking Winslow who skated to the right
circle
and ripped a shot into the glove-side upper corner to break the
scoreless deadlock. UMass had more opportunities in the second but
Julia Neuberger snuffed each attempt that penetrated the Panthers
solid defense. Midd blew open the game in the third just 1:54 in
as Janka Hlinka
picked up a loose puck off an aggressive corner forecheck
and skated between the dots to let a wrister fly. Just two minutes later
Julia Wardwell and Hlinka worked in the Beacon's zone and Hlinka fired
on net with Winslow redirecting it in.
Midd stayed on the attack and the
defense held UMass to just 3 shots in the period. At 10:45 Midd was
back on the powerplay and it was Winslow again who picked up a feed
from Jessica Young and fired on net. The Beacon's netminder stopped
the shot but the puck rebounded down to Elizabeth Wulf on the
doorstep and Wulf rammed it home before getting here skates pulled
out from under her.

Panthers are NESCAC Champs;
Winslow goal in OT secures 5-4 win

Maddie Winslow (18) and Shanna Hickman (5)
watch Winslow's
OT gamewinner hit twine at 6:37 of the extra frame. Midd came
out flying
with Katie Mandigo letting us know she was back in
form with a
blast from the top of the right circle that eluded the
Amherst netminder at 38 seconds! Jessica Young led a rush just
three minutes later that ended up
in a disputed goal but Midd had
a 2-0 lead early. Katie Mandigo padded the lead at 16:58 with
another rocket and Midd seemed in control of this one. But Amherst
roared back on four unanswered goals
and the Panthers found
themselves on the short end of a 4-3 score with 7:00 on the clock.
Midd continued to work hard and it paid dividends as Janka Hlinka
redirected a shot from the point by Audrey Quirk just two minutes
later. In OT it began to look like we were settling in for a long
afternoon as both netminders kept coming up big and stingy
defenses limited opportunity. At the six minute mark the Panthers
were applying pressure in the Ahmerst end and Jessica Young
swung behind the net and spotted Maddie Winslow coming down
the slot. She fed a beautiful pass to Winslow who banged it home
(above) and the Kenyon erupted.
