Minutes of Environmental Council
23 September, 1996

PRESENT: Maggie Buck, John Elder, Jennifer Hazen, Andy McBeth, Grant Meyer, Robert Pack, Linda Pitkin, Ann Taylor, Nick Tuff, Judy Watts, George Whitney.

GUESTS: Alex Lee, Ted Mayer.

1. Jen Hazen reported that we have received letters from students interested in serving on the Environmental Council. A committee of Maggie Buck, Andy McBeth, and Jen Hazen was formed to develop a criteria and review the applications. The committee will present the criteria and propose a slate to the Council. Council members will be asked for their approval of the slate via electronic mail prior to the next meeting so the new members may join us as soon as possible.

2. John Elder proposed a slate of subcommittees. The Council decided to form the following four subcommittees, subject to change if the Council so desires:

• Educational / Outreach (events, speakers, ads, etc.)
• Chair: Jen Hazen
• Ann Taylor
• Maggie Buck
• Cheryl Lacey (upon acceptance)

• Pedestrian Campus (discussion and planning of pedestrian campus proposal)
• Chair: John Elder
• Andy McBeth
• Jen Hazen
• George Whitney
• Judy Watts

• Conservation / Efficiency (lighting, water, waste, purchasing issues)
• Chair: Jon Woodbury (upon acceptance)
• Grant Meyer
• Maggie Buck
• Andy McBeth

• Planning & Development Advisory / Review (review current practices, status of initiatives, and develop policies for college involving development and other issues)
• Chair: Nick Tuff
• Robert Pack
• Linda Pitkin
• Cheryl Lacey (upon acceptance)
• Jen Hazen
• Judy Watts

3. Subcommittees will work on the following by the next meeting and produce a 1-2 page report submitted to Jen Hazen by Wednesday, 9 October. Copies of the reports will be distributed to Council members prior to the next meeting for review:

• Educational / Outreach: Begin planning of Environmental Fair, scheduled for 21, November, 1996. Review educational events of past and make plans for the coming year. Work on possible connections with Thomas Commons for event planning.
• Pedestrian Campus: Work with architectural firm Wallace-Floyd which did a proposal last year. Representative David Burson will be on campus Wednesday, 25 Sept. and Thursday, 26 Sept. and members may possibly meet with him at lunch on Thursday. George Whitney will look into it. Begin consideration of planning public meetings with college community. First meeting scheduled for Friday, 27 September at 12:15 in the Redfield Proctor Room.
• Conservation / Efficiency: Grant Meyer will brief Jon Woodbury and schedule first meeting.
• P & D Advisory / Review: Begin review of current policy and guidelines. Jon Woodbury and Norm Cushman may be helpful to talk with. Robert Pack suggested doing a survey of community opinion on the CollegeÕs environmental initiatives and commitment. The subcommittee will begin work on this, possibly working with the Psychology Department for statistical assistance.

4. New members will decide after appointment which committees they would like to join.

5. Jen Hazen requested that all meeting time and member information of subcommittees be submitted to her. She will make the information available to Council members and the college community.

6. Judy Watts requested that all Council members have a copy of the Task Force report and familiarize themselves with it prior to the next meeting. Council members will come prepared to make suggestions to the P & D Advisory / Review Subcommittee.

7. The next meeting was planned for Monday, 14 October, 1996 at 4:15 PM in Mitchell Green Lounge. Judy Watts will chair.

8. Meeting was adjourned.
