Team News '99-00

  • Midd sent a smaller contingent to the second debate of the year at Smith College, as many team members are planing on attendin the Harvard tournament on October 8th. Middlebury A(Doug Chini '00, Gregory Ferguson Cradler '00) repeated their performance of the previous week finishing with a record of 3 and 2. Middlebury featured two of our new novices, Kartik Raj '03 and Abdur-Rahim Syed'03, who finished with a 1 and 4 record. Though the debate was a good one, the trip's highlight had to be the fall foliage in Vermont's backwoods. Ahh fall!

  • Middlebury attended it's first tournament of the year on Sept 24th and 25th. Midd sent four teams to Williams College. Both Middlebury A(James Meader '01.5, Peter Nestor '01.5) and Middlebury B ( Doug Chini '00, Gregory Ferguson-Cradler '00) came within one victory of reaching the quarterfinals, with both teams finishing 3 and 2. Brian Capecci '02 and Lisa Jasinski '02.5 won the fifth place award in the novice division, and Grace Hardy'03 and Joanna Matthew '03 competed in their first ever debates as Middlebury D.

  • Over the summer the Debate Team received a substantial budget increase and was transferred to the academic side of the college. The team also announced plans for the first ever debate tournament at Middlebury. The tournament, to be titled the Edwin Lawrence Invitiational, in honor of our endowment's primary contributor, is tentatively scheduled for March 10, 2000.


    1998-1999 News

  • The team attended its final tournament of the 1998-1999 school year, The National Championships at Fordham University. Adil Husain '01 and Doug Chini '00 debated for Midd and James Meader '01.5 attended as a judge. Results from the tournie were not receieved.

  • Elections were held April 7th. Doug Chini '00 was elected President, James Meader '01.5 and Adil Husain '01 were elected joint Vice Presidents(James will serve in the fall and Adil in the spring), and Lisa Jasinksi '02.5, our new baby feb was elected Secreatry/Treasurer.


    New Improved Constitution!

  • The Middlebury Debate Team, under the direction of Mike Wiser '00, drafted a new constitution two years ago. The vote for ratification was held in the spring of '98, and the constitution was finally approved by the SGA Constitution committeein the spring of 1999.     The Middlebury Campus, Middlebury's weekly newspaper loves the Debate Team. However, even we have to admit that their coverage isn't exactly critical of us. We love the support though. Click on the article to read it. The articles are pretty large, so it may take a while to load.
