ART AND CHEMISTRY
Course Under Development

This course is for artists or art lovers who want to learn the molecular basis of artistic materials and color, and the techniques involved in art conservation and detecting forgery. The lecture topics include the Periodic Table, the concepts of electromagnetic radiation and its interaction with matter, and the chemical formula and physical properties of art materials. The discussion topics include case studies of conservation (i.e. the Dunhuang 'Diamond Sutra'), restoration (i.e. Renaissance frescos) and forgery (i.e.the 'Etruscan Warriors'). Laboratory activities will provide oppotunities to prepare art materials (old vs. new) and to study their properties using various instrumental techniques.

1 hr Lecture, 1 hr Discussion, 1 hr Lab.
