Jeff Byers received a B.S. degree from the University of Rochester in 1979 and a Ph.D. from Dartmouth College in 1984, where he worked in the group of Thomas A. Spencer . He held a postdoctoral fellowship in the group of Gary Keck at the University of Utah before joining the Middlebury faculty in 1986.

His teaching interests lie predominately in General Chemistry (CH103, CH 104) and Introductory and Advanced Organic Chemistry (CH 241, CH242, and CH442). He also teaches a Freshman Seminar entitled "Fraud, Foolishness, and Serendipity" (FS004)

Current Research Interests lie in the application of radical intermediates to organic synthesis

He enjoys organizing departmental outdoor activities such as our annual fall foliage hikes in the Green Mountains or Adirondacks and spring skiing trips to Tuckerman's Ravine on Mt. Washington in New Hampshire.

Hobbies and Interests included hiking (especially peak-bagging), skiing (nordic and alpine) and piano.
