COMMENTS: Used at the precollege level, particularly when state text adoption lists offer no alternatives. Written toward the end of the audiolingual era. Has authentic contemporary Russian, a good mix of dialogues, grammar exercises and reading select ions. Weak in organization and cultural authenticity, but has good grammar explanations and is easily adaptable to communicationoriented methodology.

COMMENTS: In use at University of New Hampshire. An excellent follow-up to single-stem based elementary and intermediate textbooks. Roots designated in vocabulary entries. Clear and useful grammatical notes and a good sampling of translations from Eng lish to Russian and vice versa. Each chapter introduced by a reading which incorporates the following grammar, syntax, and vocabulary. Very effective text for breaching the gap between simple and complex sentence structure skills' developmenmt. An e xcellent review book for preparing for standardized exams.
