Bely refers readers to his own autobiographical novel, Kotik Letaev, Skify, pp. 14-15. In the 1922 version the passage appears on pp. 16-17. An English translation of the novel was done by Gerald Janecek. Bely refers to the "sphere that outlives oneself" [perezhivayushchi sebya shar].
tohu-wa-bohu The Hebrew for the words of Genesis 1, 2: "And the earth was without form, and void." Bely clarifies: "Rudolf Steiner with the assistance of sounds of the Hebrew language clarifies all of this: In Course XIV for members of the Anthroposophical Society." these "o-u-a-o-u", invested into 'h-w-h' form "ohu-wa-ohu." The major discussion of tohu wabohu can be found in Steiner's Lecture 3. (44-61). See in particular pp. 47-48. Note the phrase tohu-wa-bohu is still used in German to mean "chaos, disorder."
void and without form In the King James Version Genesis 1:2 reads: "The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters." In the Luther Bible we read: Und die Erde war wüst und leer, und es war finster auf der Tiefe; und der Geist Gottes schwebte aud dem Wasser." In Russian the verse (in transliteration) reads: Zemlya zhe byla bezvidna i pusta, i t'ma nad bezdnoyu, I dukh Bozhij nosilsya nad vodoyu." Bely and or his typesetter have misquoted the passage leading to real confusion. They reverse the order of "without form and void" in Russian [bezvidna i pusta] and mistakenly replace the replace "without form" [bezvidna] with "without water" [bezvodna]. Perhaps Bely was confused by the German "wüst" which can mean disorderly and desert, and also is found the German noun for desert which is "Wüste", Russian [pustynya]. The confusion might have been aided by the final words "the waters" "auf dem Wasser" and Russian "nad vodoyu." Later in this section Bely will repeat the error but also use the noun "formlessness" [bezvidnost']), presumably to associate with the correct biblical "without form" [bezvidna]. I leave it to the reader to decide if this was all simply an error, or whether there might be another explanation.
bereshiit bara Elohim The Hebrew for Genesis 1.1: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."
"ha'arez" Hebrew for "earth" in the passage in Genesis 1:1 "Bereshit bara Elohim eye khashamaim bet kharets."* Genesis 1:1. "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." winged animals The four evangelists, the authors of the Gospels, have been portrayed as four winged figures: "derived from the vision of Ezechiel and the Apocalypse (4.6-8). To Matthew was assigned the human figure; to Mark, the lion; to Luke, the ox; and to John, the eagle. The Evangelists were assigned their symbols based on the opening passages of each one's Gospel: the man to Matthew since he narrated the genealogy and birth of Christ; the lion to Mark, because he begins dramatically with the vox clamantis in deserto (like the sound of the king of beasts); the calf to Luke, because he describes the sacrifice of Zachary; and the eagle to John, since he commences with the preexistence of the Logos [Word] in heaven."
