The First Russian Revolution was another important event in Russian history. Thousands of protestors marched on the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg in 1905 to protest the tsar's actions. Many of them were shot down in response. However, as massive protests and strikes ensued, Nicholas II approved the creation of a parliament called the Duma in a manifesto on October 17, 1905. It was later dissolved with a new less progessive Duma put in place.
