The Rosetta Stone Russian Package

The Rosetta Stone is a computer software package available on CD-ROM. The application disk, program disk and user guide are all packaged as one and each student must purchase her/his own copy. The program must first be installed on your own computer or a public computer and then the program disk should be inserted.

The Rosetta Stone Russian program is an integral part of the Basic Russian course. It provides alternative opportunities for practice in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The presentation of material is complimentary-but not parallel to the materials in Russian Now! Consequently there will be times when new words or concepts are introduced in one set of materials before they are covered in the other set. You are expected, however, to have complete mastery of both sets of material during any given day in the course.

By its nature The Rosetta Stone lends itself to individual practice and repetition where you the learner are in charge of the number of repetitions and the time spent. At the beginning you should be spending from forty five minutes to one hour every evening mastering the material on the CD ROM. Do not go forward until you feel completely comfortable with the each evening's assignment-but you must go forward and keep up.

To begin read the User Guide carefully and be prepared to spend an hour the first evening familiarizing yourself with the possibilities of the course. By the second evening you will be assigned a specific unit section to be mastered by the next morning. Conceivably you could do over a thousand repetitions by working through each and every aspect of the program. For the start you should play the material in the three BROWSER modes, and follow that with work on modes 1, 5, and 9. You may want to and some may need to do other modes until you can say each word or utterance perfectly, identify the pictures and say the Russian text, and read the Russian characters to pronounce perfectly the words or utterances.

All of this may seem slightly confusing and overwhelming at first, but rest assured it will become second nature in a matter of days. I am always available to respond to e-mail messages to tom.beyer@middlebury.edu or in person on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Please follow the enclosed schedule religiously. It can be cut and folded to fit inside your CD case. You will be responsible for these materials which constitute 20% of your final grade.
